Description

Under administrative direction, to direct the operation of the Valley Medical Center medical library and to provide professional medical library and research services.

Typical Tasks

  • Schedules, supervises and administers the operation of the medical library;
  • Interviews, selects, trains, evaluates, disciplines subordinate staff;
  • Coordinates library activities with other hospital departments;
  • Reviews and selects from available materials for inclusion into the library and departmental collections and assists others with their selections;
  • Classifies and catalogs medical books, journals, and other published materials received by the library and maintains complete card files, indices and bibliographies of all medical literature;
  • Reviews publishers catalogs, journal/book reviews and publisher's reports and orders and receives books and materials;
  • Reviews the collection for addition or deletion of materials and evaluates and removes out-dated materials from shelves;
  • Processes acquisition of books, audio-visual materials, and journal materials;
  • Performs literature searches and provides research and reference assistance to members of the hospital staff, students, and community physicians
  • Utilizes computers for library applications;
  • Oversees the use of on-site and off-site storage of books and journals;
  • Provides orientation to house staff, students and others on the effective use of the library's resources;
  • Arranges for borrowing materials from other collections;
  • Prepares periodic reports on library operation;
  • Prepares and manages the medical library budgets;
  • Ensures departmental compliance with regulatory and licensing requirements;
  • Provides staff support to Library Committee Chairman;
  • Demonstrates and reinforces Service Excellence principles;
  • Performs related work as required.

Employment Standards

Sufficient education, training and experience to demonstrate possession of the following knowledge and abilities.

Experience Note: The knowledge and skills required of this classification are normally obtained through possession of a Master’s Degree in Library Science and a certificate issued by the Medical Library Association and three (3) years of experience in a medical or health science library.

Substantial experience in a medical or health science library which provided the opportunity to develop the following knowledge and abilities:

Knowledge of:
  • Basic sciences and general medical terminology;
  • Medical library science;
  • Typical reference sources for medical research;
  • principles of supervision, management and budget;
  • National Library of Medicine classification system;
  • Automated library systems and programs.

    Ability to:
  • Schedule and supervise the work of others, establish work procedures;
  • Initiate and implement library policies and procedures;
  • Interpret patron's questions and aid them in research and solving related problems;
  • Acquire, classify and catalog library materials for a teaching hospital;
  • Administer the budget of a medical library and media department;
  • Evaluate and acquire new materials; and delete out-dated materials;
  • Compile and write reports;
  • Deal effectively, tactfully and courteously with all library patrons and establish and maintain effective working relationships with all hospital staff and general public;
  • Write and speak effectively;
  • Maintain a working relationship with other medical libraries;
  • Operate a personal computer.
