Position Summary

Seeking a part-time nurse abstractor with labor and delivery experience to gather data from medical records and create Case Summary narratives for committee review.

This is a part-time 20-25% FTE position (hours can vary from 8-10 hours per week) with flexible scheduling. Work can be done remotely. Candidates must own a password-protected computer (PC or Mac, not Chromebook).

Full salary range for this position: $80,043 to $118,302 per year based on 100% FTE. The typical hiring range for this position is from $80,043 (minimum) to $99,173 (midpoint), based on 100% FTE. The starting salary is determined based on the candidate’s knowledge, skills, experience, as well as budget availability.

Project background: The CA-Pregnancy-Associated Mortality Review is an enhanced surveillance project started in 2006 to identify possible reasons for the rise in maternal mortality, increasing racial/ethnic disparities, and to develop evidence-based clinical, policy and programmatic interventions. In-depth medical record and coroner report review is conducted to identify contributing factors and quality improvement opportunities to ultimately decrease maternal mortality in California.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Complete training with PHI and CDC Staff on medical record abstraction protocols and processes, maintaining confidentiality, exploring bias and perception, and addressing vicarious trauma with self-care techniques.
  • Complete PHI’s human subjects research training requirements and sign confidentiality agreement.
  • Accurately abstract and code procedural information from the medical records of women who died of pregnancy-related causes. Data sources include prenatal records, hospitalization records, labor and delivery and immediate post-partum records, EMT transport records, and coroner/autopsy reports.
  • Create a Case Summary for each death using a pre-established template.
  • Store all project-related information in a [provided] locked file cabinet and maintain confidentiality.
  • Maintain 90% accuracy rating to be determined by PHI senior staff during quality control measures.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with PHI staff and inform them of any obstacles encountered during data collection.
  • Track completed chart reviews and number of hours worked. Complete bi-weekly online timesheet.
  • Attend and participate in monthly Committee meetings. Currently, all meetings are virtual due to Covid-19 but in the future may take place in Los Angeles or Northern California (all travel expenses reimbursed if in California).
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 7 years of nursing experience in obstetrics, antenatal, and postpartum care.
  • Bachelor’s degree in related field is required, or substitute with four additional years of relevant experience.
  • Formal schooling equivalent to or greater than: Associate degree in Nursing, Registered Nurse (RN), Nurse Practitioner (NP), Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM), or Physician’s Assistant (PA).

Other Qualifications

  • Candidates currently working in maternity care are preferred.
  • Demonstrated understanding of normal/abnormal processes of pregnancy, delivery, and postpartum and the wide spectrum of factors that can influence maternal outcomes.
  • Demonstrated strong professional communication skills (phone, email, fax, verbal).
  • Experience in medical record review (peer review, FIMR, etc.).
  • Computer skills, including SharePoint, Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Word – electronic medical records.
  • Knowledge of HIPAA and confidentiality laws.
  • Ability to serve as an objective, unbiased storyteller; not looking to assign blame.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
  • Flexibility and ability to accomplish tasks in short time frames.
  • Demonstrated understanding of social determinants contributing to maternal mortality.
  • Availability to work 8-10 hours per week with flexible scheduling.
  • Preferred candidates will have experience serving Black and Latinx perinatal communities.

This position is classified as exempt based on the job duties. However, based on the FTE, salary level of the employee, or federal/state/local laws, the employee may be classified as nonexempt.
