Primary Function/General Purpose of Position

The Lead Ultrasound Tech works with the Supervisor and Manager of Imaging to implement the business strategies of the imaging departments, directs patient flow, makes employee work assignments, provides daily oversight of technical, support and nursing functions to optimize resources and exceed customer expectations.

Essential Job Functions

• Demonstrates knowledge of direct patient care by evaluating the patient, verifying patient ID, and related information to assure appropriate procedure is performed

• Explains procedure to patient; prepares patient for procedure by obtaining and recording patient history and consent form (if applicable)

• Ensures patient comfort, privacy, and safety during procedure; monitors condition of patient and medical equipment that may be disturbed due to the nature of exam and report changes to patient care services

• Documents sonographer's impressions and relays findings to physician

• Obtains and records images necessary to demonstrate normal and pathological findings; documents all pertinent information, e.g., lab values, patient histories; demonstrates and maintains clinical competency particularly related to patients who are: newborn, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric as deemed necessary by designated facility

• Participates in performance improvement projects

• Assists department in achieving successful results in all federal and state and local agency audits.

• Participates in the education/instruction of students and the orientation of new staff. -high level disinfection probes per joint commission standards.

• Must use various ultrasound modalities dependent on the type of anatomy being examined.

• Must become proficient in recognizing cross-sectional anatomy and understanding of related technology.

• Demonstrates favorable guest relations and continues to promote values of the hospital in daily work performance.

• Assist Radiology Manager in implementing business strategies for the department such as; directing patient flow, associate work assignments, technical support, optimizing resources and exceeding patient expectations.

• Performs ultrasound exam or procedure study.

• Completes paperwork in a timely manner and uses picture archiving communication system (PACS) to send images for interpretation and storage.

• Prints images or burns to compact disc (CD) on request.

• Provides input to Radiology Manager or Supervisor for annual performance evaluation of staff.

• Enhances professional growth and development through participation in education programs, current literature, and in-services.

• Maintains continuing education credits to meet licensure requirements.

• Follows established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, performance improvement, safety, environmental and infection control standards.

• Transports patients to procedure room; prepares and maintains room while providing service in a timely manner. Also accommodates any changes in the schedule for patient or physician.

• Orders and stocks supply.

• Demonstrates an ability to promote and market service at facility.

• Follows guidelines as established by American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (ARRT), American College of Radiology (ACR) and American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS).

• Performs payroll authorization duties, schedules staff and provide input into annual staff performance evaluations.

• Coordinates equipment service needs and training of technical staff.

• Performs Ultrasound as ordered/directed, according to standard practices and procedures; utilizes patient monitoring equipment during procedures; and produces images for interpretation and distribution to patients and physicians.

Licensing/Certification

Credentialed in Ultrasound technology by one of the following: Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) or American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS), or Sonographer by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) (required)

BLS Basic Life Support – American Heart Association (preferred upon hire, must obtain from approved source prior to direct patient care) (required)  

Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) in Abdomen, Breast, Obstetrics/Gynecology (preferred)

Education

Associate of Science Imaging (preferred)                                                                           

Work Experience

1 year of experience as an Ultrasound Tech (required)

2 years of experience as an Ultrasound Tech (preferred)

Training

EPIC Electronic Health Record (EHR) (preferred)

Picture archiving communication system (PACS) (preferred)
