Shift:

Monday thru Friday, +Weekends as Production Scheduled Requires

Pay Rate: $20.50 - 22.00

This position is responsible for assisting the Microbiologist with all laboratory aspects of qualification and quantification of microorganisms within a quality assurance and Research and Development setting in a processed meat plant. Receives workflow assignments and duties from the Microbiologist. Analyzes, reads, and records laboratory and quality control test results. Works weekends and helps to cover vacations and other absences.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The person in this position:
  • Performs a battery of laboratory tests on finished, cooked meat products, environmental and raw material samples. (50%)
  • Prepares and sterilizes media for laboratory use including operation of sterilizer. Disposes of biohazard waste after sterilization in the autoclave. Washes dishes necessary for media and testing. (15%)
  • Operates both simple and complex laboratory equipment. (10%)
  • Reads and records laboratory and quality control test results. (10%)
  • Understands and always uses sterile laboratory technique.
  • Works with, isolates and identifies pathogenic bacteria.
  • Interprets and alerts appropriate personnel (Microbiologist, Lab Manager or QA and R&D personnel) when lab tests fall outside specifications.
  • Participates in Safety and training programs as relating to the both the Microbiology Laboratory and Plant.
  • Sets up, analyzes, and identifies tests and pathogens for the AOAC proficiency test program.
  • Computer data entry as required.
  • Works with information deemed to be confidential and/or trade secrets owned by the company, and protects the company's rights in and ownership of those trade secrets or confidential information.
  • Performs cleaning and other duties as assigned.
  • Required to contribute to harmony in the work place.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • 18 years or older
  • 6 months of work history
  • Degree in Biology, Microbiology, or a related field (OR) related experience.
  • Knowledge basic microbiology lab principles and HACCP programs is desired, but not required.
  • The individual must possess manual dexterity and good eyesight in order to perform laboratory work.
  • Individuals must be able to perform multiple assignments and be available for weekend work as required
