Engineering Manager, Data and AI

SUMMARY

Mortenson is currently seeking an Engineering Manager to provide leadership of our data platforms and engineering services that power our AI and analytic solutions used across the company. This role is responsible for leading our data engineering efforts, driving the adoption of best practices and operational processes related to our use of data throughout the data lifecycle, and being an expert on data concepts, strategies, and direction across the company. This leader will engage with business partners, peers, and outside vendors to drive industry-leading data solutions.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead overall management of data platform solutions for the company.
  • Identify and drive strategic opportunities to enable and promote innovation with data assets and tools.
  • Drive business outcomes through technology by partnering with business and operating group leaders to enable and support their data reporting needs.
  • Create and execute a strategic vision to justify and promote investments in data capabilities to advance our team member experience across the company in alignment with department and company goals.
  • Develop and maintain robust data infrastructure to support AI initiatives, ensuring seamless integration and scalability of AI models and algorithms across the company's data platforms
  • Champion learnings and best practices for the use of common data engineering tools and modern cloud technologies.
  • Establish metrics to proactively identify areas of improvement and measure progress.
  • Lead engagement with business leaders on upcoming data engineering changes through internal knowledge sharing activities.
  • Coordinate with service delivery peers across departments to drive best-in-class service and support across functions.
  • Lead the planning and execution of service support plans for major projects, technology changes, and data system implementations.
  • Effectively work and build relationships with those of diverse backgrounds and organizational levels.
  • Stay abreast of the latest data engineering capabilities and technologies to ensure the company remains at the forefront of industry advancements.
  • Develop a staff that takes ownership for resolving problems and embraces root cause analysis, quick problem resolution, and continuous improvement.
  • Determine staffing requirements; interview and hire personnel as appropriate.
  • Lead team members by example, offer effective coaching and feedback, and effectively manage performance.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in information systems, Business Administration, Computer Science, or other related field or equivalent work experience.
  • Minimum of 6 years of data engineering and business/industry work experience and at least 3 years in leading data engineering operational and/or service delivery functions.
  • Experience working with modern cloud data technology stacks (e.g., Azure, GCP, AWS)
  • Strong business acumen and interpersonal skills; able to work with Business to influence and effect change to achieve common goals.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to explain data engineering concepts and technologies to business teams, and business concepts to technologists.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage stakeholder relationships from peers to end users.
  • Be detail oriented, and self-motivated with a demonstrated ability to be a strong problem solver and decision maker with the courage and conviction to follow through on decisions, mediate conflict, and drive change.
  • Strong capability on execution to effectively carry out plans and achieve goals.
  • Experience with service readiness and project implementation planning.
  • Experience with construction, property management, engineering, or business operations preferred.

The base pay range for this role  is $126,500 - $189,800. (Actual range is higher for the following office locations: Denver, CO and Chicago, IL – 5%, Seattle, WA, and Portland, OR – 10%, Washington, D.C. – 12.5%). 

Base pay is positioned within the range based on several factors including an individual’s knowledge, skills, and experience, with consideration given to internal equity.
