About the Role
The Netflix Emerging Creative Motion Design team is seeking a Lead Motion UX Designer to join us! Our ideal candidate can lead motion design solutions from concept to delivery. You will work collaboratively with visual designers and UX design leads, AV leads, program managers, and engineers to translate multi-platform (TV, mobile, and web) UI designs into device-performant interactive motion designs, with a focus on usability, feasibility, narrative, and delight, consistent with the Netflix brand. We are looking for a lead-level candidate who can create strategic and conceptual UX motion design proposals and present motion concepts to cross-functional partners, turning their feedback into quick iterations, and working with engineering to drive high fidelity implementation. You’ll lead the creation of Netflix design’s first-ever motion design system. You’ll focus on users, state-driven device interactions, screen transitions, and choreography (buttons, icons, navigation), usability, UX interaction, and design-forward delightful experiences. You’ll drive implementation with engineering for all UX motion designs.
What You'll Do
- Lead motion designers to create, maintain, improve, document, and evolve a motion design process and pattern library for various user needs
- Collaborate with motion designers, product designers, and A/V strategists to understand new product decisions, build back into the system when validated, and extend to engineering
- Advocate for inclusive experiences across platforms, being able to speak to the usability benefits of including motion in design work
- Communicate releases clearly to extended stakeholders, rationalizing decisions based on data, brand guidance, or accessibility/usability
- Create a collaborative working environment that will enable our design and engineering partners to build new experiences with a motion system confidently
- Own the full lifecycle of motion workflow, from standardizing process with motion designers, to contributing motion design work to the Hawkins design system, to collaborating on implementation with engineers
- Mentor, coach, and up level motion and product designers around UX motion best practicesHelp other motion designers work through challenges
- Plan and guide ECXD motion execution of any cross-squad UX motion initiatives, from roadmapping to design crits
- Embrace A/B testing to understand what design solutions best work toward engaging viewers and retaining them
- Design components and patterns backed by research, put through testing, and published against benchmarks established with our cross-functional partners
- Initiate and drive ongoing systems research efforts, acting as glue between all teams involved in horizontal projects
The Must-Haves
- 7+ years of experience in product design building experiences for end customers
- Motion systems expertise to hit the ground running designing and publishing motion patterns and guidelines
- Ability and desire to flex high & low to inform strategic decisions as well as execute detailed hands-on work
- Strong demonstration of visual craft and attention to detail
- Ability to effectively navigate ambiguity, build alignment and influence peers
- Manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet tight or changing deadlines
- Excellent communication skills to articulate decisions and rationale
- An understanding of the broader design system and motion design communities, with a desire to innovate next-generation systems, tooling and workflows
- Strong technical understanding of motion design concepts to communicate effectively with engineering
- Understanding of driving accessible solutions at scale, across TV and mobile platforms
- Expertise with After Effects, as well as other motion design tools. Ability to adapt to or develop new tooling due to strong motion principle expertise
- Experience utilizing Figma / Figma-constructed assets to ingest into motion tooling and/or experience ingesting assets from a design system
- Understanding the difference between low-level CSS animations and higher-level, complex motion choreography
- The spidey sense to recognize patterns most people don’t see in the organization, and the ability to facilitate collaborative efforts to connect the dots
- Experience working with creative & art directors, motion designers, audio designers, and illustrators as well as product designers, engineers, and product managers
- Exemplify reliability, accountability, and professionalism in all work-related interactions

The overall market range for roles in this area of Netflix is typically $80,000-$550,000.
