JOB SUMMARY

The Athletic Director will work in conjunction with other Tribal, Private and Public Schools within Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) to create and coach competitive athletic teams for Muckleshoot Tribal Schools, which will initially include basketball, football, soccer, and volleyball based on student and community feedback.  The Athletic Director will work with the Physical Fitness program staff to create and implement a K-12 physical fitness program.

MAJOR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work in conjunction with other Tribal, Private and Public Schools within Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) to create and coach competitive athletic teams for Muckleshoot Tribal Schools, which will initially include basketball, football, soccer, and volleyball based on student and community feedback.
  • Encourage student fitness and athletics in a complete K-12 physical fitness program (which includes organized sports opportunities) by providing supervision, leadership and coordination of staff, volunteers, students and community on all matters related to athletic programs.  
  • Supervises and evaluates personnel; serves as mentor to coaches; observes and provides feedback regarding performance; trains and motivates staff; works with staff to resolve problems; recommends the appointment, assignment, promotion, probation or dismissal of MTS coaches.
  • Promote community participation (parents, industry representatives, community members, elders) as coaches and supporters of Tribal School Teams. 
  • Work with students, staff and community to promote community pride in student athletic accomplishments
  • Manage procedures and policies of athletic programs: philosophy, program offerings, legal issues, league, district and state affiliations and regulations. 
  • Coordinate and facilitate requests for equipment and supplies orders for athletic programs.
  • Coordinate seasonal athletic awards, athletic schedules and articles for the Muckleshoot monthly newspaper.
  • Coordinate transportation needs for athletic events and practice.
  • Effectively communicate with students, parents, coaches, and faculty to ensure all parties are informed and engaged in athletic programs and events.
  • Regularly update stakeholders on schedules, policy changes, and important announcements through various channels, including newsletters, meetings, and social media.
  • Address concerns and conflicts in a timely and constructive manner, promoting a positive and inclusive environment for all participants.
  • Work closely with the school administration and community partners to ensure communication is consistent and coherent.
  • Establish and maintain channels for receiving feedback from coaches, athletes, and parents to continuously improve athletic program and communication practices.
  • Because of the Tribe’s commitment to community service and the well-being of its members, each employee may be expected to perform a wide range of office and field duties from time to time. Such duties may or may not be related to their regular responsibilities
  • EDUCATION - EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING FOR POSITION

    Required:

    • Bachelor’s Degree in Education or related field, Washington State Teaching certificate.
    • Five (5) years’ experience coaching a variety of sports at all levels.

     

    Preferred:

    • Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership or Physical Fitness/Health.
    • Washington State Administrator Certification
    • Athletic Director experience
    • Five (5) years’ experience teaching and three (3) years’ experience coordinating an athletic program.

    SPECIFIC SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES REQUIRED FOR POSITION

    • Knowledge of the requirements for school membership and participation in Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) regulations and of applicable Washington Administrative codes (WAC).
    • Knowledge of culturally appropriate K-12 Physical Fitness programs, activities and sports teams and the ability to create, implement and supervise.
    • Ability to build professional relationships and partnerships through effective oral and written communication with Muckleshoot community, school administration, staff, parent or guardians and students.
    • Ability to maintain confidentiality in matters relating to school, student and families.
    • Ability to work independently, prioritizing workload, and adapting to changes in work load demands.
    • Ability to gain the respect and confidence of students, parents and community through modeling of appropriate behavior and independently seeking resources and volunteers to facilitate a variety of sports programs.
    • Ability to learn and work effectively with age appropriate students, staff, and volunteers within a native community.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

    The employee may be required to run, jump, sit, stand or walk for up to 2 hours uninterrupted. The employee is frequently required to walk, use hands or operate, finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls, and reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job includes close vision and the ability to adjust focus. Frequent bending and reaching, occasionally crouching, kneeling and twisting and occasionally pushing/pulling up to 50 lbs.  Able to be physically active up to 80% of the time to include standing, lifting, walking, twisting, bending, pushing, pulling and reaching. 

    Licenses or Certifications Required

    A valid Washington State driver’s license is required at the time of appointment or at a time set by the Tribe. Washington State Teaching Certificate and CPR/First Aid Certification are required at the time of appointment.
