New York and Long Island Independent Bookstore Representative

The New York and Long Island Independent Bookstore Representative is responsible for selling Hachette Book Group and Client publisher titles to an established territory of independent bookstores, as well as to new accounts as needed. The ideal candidate should be local to the NY Metro and/or Long Island area and commutable to the HBG NY office in Rockefeller Center.

The Representative will achieve individual and company sales goals and increase territory net sales through:

  • Creative presentation of frontlist and backlist titles during sales appointments using Edelweiss and other sales tools Management of relationships with established accounts and development of new accounts.
    Providing hands on customer service to accounts by informing them about changes to the list, special offers and publicity, and helping to plan and coordinate promotions and coop advertising,
    Generating regular feedback on titles, promotions and sales to sales management as needed.
    Sales analysis and reporting that requires knowledge of Excel, and will include training on internal systems.
  • Managing estimates for indie-exclusive promotional offers (displays, signed editions) and monitor sell-in; collaborate with field to maximize indie-exclusive promotional placement
    Providing indie-specific sales analytics for budgeting, initial laydown projections
    Acting on behalf of accounts with internal departments, such as Marketing, Publicity, Customer Financial Services, etc., adhering to company policies.
    Other internal and customer facing projects as needed
  • Ability to come into the New York office as needed

Requirements:

  • 2.5+ years of trade publishing, sales experience, or bookseller experience preferred
  • Excellent communication skills (both oral and written) and an excellent telephone manner, with an interest in and ability to speak about books.
  • Strong organizational skills, be able to work well in a fast-paced environment and be able to work independently.
  • Ability to resolve issues professionally in a timely fashion, involving multiple parties as necessary, while maintaining high level of customer care, and attention to detail
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills and ability to participate as a team member in a small department.
  • Enthusiasm for books-pre-publication reading a must.
  • Microsoft Word and Excel, Edelweiss plus, as well as database experience
  • Candidate must be able to travel via car and train and be adaptable and willing to work evenings and weekends when necessary - author dinners, trade shows, etc.

The compensation range for this position is $65,000-$75,000. Salary can vary based on a number of factors including skills, experience, and location — talk with your recruiter to learn more. There may be times that you will be required (or requested) to work overtime due to the nature of your role or exceptional workload issues or special projects.
