Job Description:

B-Side by Boston Globe Media is a new hyper-local daily newsletter delivering the most engaging and culturally-relevant stories to Bostonians. The publication informs, connects, and entertains Millenials and Gen-Z audiences Monday through Friday via a daily newsletter and social channels.

B-Side is seeking a writer who will brainstorm, report, write, and coordinate Greater Boston’s most engaging and relevant local daily newsletter. The ideal candidate is a dynamic creative writer and storyteller deeply ingrained in Boston’s cultural fabric. The candidate will be responsible for creating and executing an editorial plan, alongside the Head of Content, for how to inform, excite, and delight Bostonians through original, user-generated, and contributor content across multimedia platforms. This person will write to fit the publication’s established identity, voice, and tone.

The writer’s primary focus will be producing and managing content for B-Side’s daily newsletter. They should possess a knack for seeking out the most buzzworthy topics in the community, as well as conducting original reporting. The writer should be able to efficiently and effectively break down and explain local stories and events and have experience reporting on topics that allow Millenial and Gen-Z audiences to live smarter, including categories like personal finance, mental health, and work life.

Responsibilities:

  • Write Boston’s most essential daily newsletter by reporting and/or aggregating a lead story, writing round-ups, and developing a unique voice that fits B-Side’s brand.
  • Pitch coverage ideas and take assignments with equal enthusiasm, assisting in creating B-Side’s editorial calendar and content strategy.
  • Produce the next day’s newsletter in content management systems, meeting daily deadlines.
  • Understand, monitor, and report on newsletter engagement and content success.
  • Publicly represent B-Side’s brand.
  • Liaise, alongside B-Side’s Head of Content, with The Boston Globe and Boston.com newsrooms to curate the most essential reads.
  • Collaborate with B-Side’s General Manager to develop a native content strategy to promote healthy advertising revenue.
  • Create content for social media (Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, Twitter).

Qualifications:

  • Extensive experience in content creation and reporting, including written and video
  • A progressive understanding of how audiences engage with content across platforms and mediums
  • Dedicated and focused brand-builder with experience growing audiences for personal brands or media companies.
  • Passionate and connected with the city of Boston, its people, and its institutions.
  • Curious about local media and knowledgeable about the industry’s trends and emerging publications.
  • Entrepreneurial with the ability to make high-level decisions.
  • Motivated to understand and leverage emerging technologies to grow audiences and deliver unique content experiences.
  • Experience delivering content in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience creating various content styles, including video scripts and social posts.
  • Understanding of photography, videography, and video editing.
  • Willingness to work nights, weekends, and other non-traditional hours as news demands
  • A willingness to adapt and be audience focused, with a curious mindset and a commitment to creating an inclusive work environment

B-Side is affiliated with Boston Globe Media Partners but is independent of The Boston Globe and Boston.com. This position is based in our downtown Boston office on a hybrid office/remote schedule
