Experience: 8+ years of experience.  
Minimum Education: BS or equivalent in Electrical Engineering 
Location: Longmont, CO
  
Compensation Range: $140,000 - $185,000 depending upon education, skills, and experience.

The Electrical Engineering (EE) Team at nLIGHT DEFENSE Systems develops and integrates a large range of devices to enable high-speed control of laser and electro-optical components for high energy laser weapon systems.  Our EE Team addresses challenging DoD requirements including high power battery and high-power AC-DC conversion solutions, high efficiency and high-power DC-DC power conversion, complex multi-function MIL-STD cabling solutions, high-speed data fiber MIL-STD cabling solutions, PCB design/development/test, challenging trouble-shooting, and tight packaging challenges.  The EE Team members are dynamic problem solvers that typically must work around numerous optical and mechanical constraints, making the job particularly challenging and interesting.  We are seeking an Electrical Engineering Manager who has with a passion for delivery of cutting-edge High Energy Laser (HEL) weapon systems to lead a dynamic and hard-working team.

Job Description: 
 
Lead the architectural design, development, testing, and implementation of rugged power and data distribution solutions for cutting-edge laser and electro-optical systems. Translate high-level requirements into robust designs by leveraging COTS solutions and existing custom libraries. Oversee hardware procurement, working closely with the supplier base. Manage hardware testing and debugging processes to identify and resolve root causes of failures. Ensure the application of safe electrical and power practices at all times. Document progress against requirements and prepare comprehensive test reports. Develop documentation templates for engineers and technician to ensure quality assessments of cables and devices. 
Responsibilities: 
  • Lead the EE team in developing Electrical System Architecture using ECAD tools (Altium Harness), balancing data, power, thermal, and mechanical constraints while leveraging a library of custom and COTS components
  • Manage the specification, design, procurement/building, and testing of rugged MIL-STD power distribution solutions.
  • Oversee the design and testing of MIL-STD data and power cabling solutions.
  • Collaborate with mechanical and electro-optical engineers on the integration of cabling, power, and cooling solutions.
  • Ensure safe electrical and power practices at all times.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve integrated power system issues from the component to the system level. Utilize test hardware safely to trace problems and identify root causes.
  • Develop and implement bonding and grounding specifications and EMI mitigation solutions.
  • Integrate electronic solutions by working with electro-optical, mechanical, firmware, and software teams.
  • Mentor and develop team members, fostering a collaborative and growth-oriented work environment.
  • Lead cross-functional collaboration to ensure project goals are met.
Required Experience / Capability: 
  • Commitment to excellence and attention to detail.

  • Strong leadership and dynamic problem-solving capability: Able to manage frequently changing requirements and develop rapid-turn solutions.
  • Effective schedule and priority management with minimal daily direction to meet mid to long-term objectives.
  • Extensive experience in hardware troubleshooting.
  • Proficiency with aerospace and military connectors (MIL-DTL-38999, MIL-DTL-5015, etc.) and IPC and/or MIL-STD cable design and assembly practices.
  • Experience with EMI mitigation practices (MIL-STD-461), bonding, grounding, and shielding system design and testing (MIL-HDBK-1857).
  • Proven supplier management experience.
  • Strong written communication skills.
  • Proficiency with MS Office 365 tools.
  • Experience with cables, including quality assessments and assembly practices.
  • Experience in leading and developing engineering teams.
  • Proven ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams.
Additional Desired Experience / Capability: 
  • Experience in PCB design and testing.
  • Software experience in C, C++, C#, or Python.
  • Familiarity with compliance testing and certification for international safety standards, EMC, and environmental regulations (UL, CE, IEC, RoHS, etc.).
  • Experience with Fiber Optic cable design for data transmission (MTP connectors and OM3/OM4 fiber).
