Senior Director Environmental Health and SafetyRaleigh, NC | Fall 2024NC State University invites applications and nominations for theposition of Senior Director of Environmental Health andSafety.About NC State University and Environmental Health andSafetyNC State University is the largest and most diverse researchinstitution in the state of North Carolina. The university iscomprised of 2110 acres on the Raleigh campus, plus over 100,000acres in research and extension farms and other facilitiesthroughout the state of North Carolina. Its population ofapproximately 31,100 students and 2040 faculty includes more than2500 graduate students supported on research and teachingappointments in the 68 established research and service centers.The 1334-acre NC State Centennial Campus complex includes a mix ofwet lab and office incubator space for start-up companies andbuildings co-inhabited by university departments and industrialtenants. This complex and diverse environment, particularly theheavy concentration of research centers and institutes, provides achallenging and interesting work environment for health and safetyprofessionals, while our land grant status and extensive propertiesprovide a similarly stimulating environment for environmentalprofessionals.Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) administers and implementsthe occupational health and safety policies and procedurespromulgated by the department and by University health and safetycommittees. Our EHS Center is staffed by professionals inbiological safety, radiation safety, chemical and laboratorysafety, occupational safety, and health and environmentalaffairs.Responsibilities of the PositionThe essential duties and responsibilities of the Director ofEnvironmental Health and Safety include but are not limited to thefollowing:• Knowledgeable of, interpret, apply and enforce rules promulgatedby EPA, OSHA, NRC and other federal, state, and local agenciesrelated to EH&S which regulate the chemical, biological, andother physical hazard use. Develop and implement specificUniversity policies and procedures for programs that utilizechemicals, biological agents, radioactive materials, non-ionizingradiation, and produce regulated unwanted waste streams;• Work with faculty and other customers (Facilities, Housing,Athletics, etc.) to increase awareness of the department'sactivities and to provide exceptional customer service tofacilitate compliance with applicable governing rules, regulations,and policies. Advise administrators, faculty, departmentalmanagers, and researchers regarding chemical regulations andoperational safety; and, provide supervisory training, uponrequest, to enhance the level of operational safety ininstitutional laboratories;• Working knowledge of principles of laboratory safety,occupational health and safety, applicable building and fire codesrelevant to academic research laboratory systems and laboratoryventilation requirements;• Familiar with financial management for long-term budget planningand management of the department's budget. Knowledge of rules andregulations for spending state funds and utilizing the statepurchasing process;• Direct the inspection of laboratories/chemical storage areas andaudit departmental operations such as facilities to recommendmethods of ensuring safe operations. Assure coordination ofadvisory meetings of the Radiation Protection Committee, HazardMaterials Committee, and Occupational Safety and Health Councilinvolving substantial interaction with faculty. Maintain chemicalinventory records of laboratories/storage areas throughout campusfor use in emergencies and laboratory safety plans for all areaswith hazardous materials in process;• Knowledge of human relations and administrative principles andtechniques. Ability to oversee the work of the Assistant Directorsand other professionals. Requires supervisory skills;• Assure that personnel are hired, trained, scheduled, andsupervised to assist in emergency response and hazardous materialsprocessing activities;• Advise local government officials and emergency personnelregarding hazardous materials;• Review EHS matters with the University's legal department asnecessary to ensure compliance;• Coordinate Worker's Compensation activity with the HumanResources Division; and• Assure that all appropriate University radiation andenvironmental licenses and permits are maintained inconformance with applicable rules, regulations, andrequirements.Minimum Education and ExperienceM.S. or M.B.A. degree required. A minimum of ten (10) years ofprogressively responsible experience in one of the environmentalhealth and safety professions in a university (or similar)environment.Department Required Skills and PreferredQualifications• Professional certification such as CIH, CSP, or CHP is stronglypreferred;• Must be highly motivated, energetic, and innovative;• Thorough knowledge of state and federal laws and regulationspertaining to EH&S issues;• Working knowledge of chemical laboratory operations, equipment,and storage practices;• Ability to communicate and establish a good working relationshipwith faculty, administration, and students of theUniversity; local, state, and federal government officials; localmedia representatives; and the general public;• Ability to think clearly and function effectively in hazardous,emergency situations;• Working knowledge of building and fire codes applicable toacademic research laboratories; and• Working knowledge of process safety protocols for the researchenvironment.How to ApplyInquiries and nominations are invited and may be directed to: NCState Executive Search Services: Justin Lang, at (919) 513-1963 orjdlang2@ncsu.edu or JennibethBrackett, at 919-244-0229 or vkbrack2@ncsu.edu.
