Quality Engineer

The Quality Engineer is responsible for dressing orders to ensure North Star BlueScope Steel meets customer and industry specifications. Responsibilities may include developing new or modifying existing steel grades for production to expand North Star BlueScope Steel’s market, implementing cost-savings measures, maintaining business systems about this role and interacting with sales/customers to ensure that North Star BlueScope steel meets all customer requirements.  


Duties and Responsibilities but not limited to:
  • Review and dress mill orders to meet customer specifications and purchase orders.
  • Ensure adherence of North Star BlueScope products to industry and customer standards.
  • Assist in the development of customer and North Star BlueScope Steel specifications.
  • Maintain material specifications, rolling codes, and North Star BlueScope Steel’s grade book.
  • Effectively communicate with customers, sales personnel, operations, and outside processors to result in positive customer relations to develop new products based on customer inquiries and mill capabilities.
  • Manage and report on trials for product development.
  • Development and maintenance of product data sheets to streamline sales inquiries.
  • Ensure adherence of all departmental personnel to safety and housekeeping practices.
  • Display solid technical skills in developing new products/grades, improving current products to establish quality control practices, and performing metallurgical investigations.
  • Effectively communicate with all personnel within the plant while implementing managerial techniques to enhance a good work culture and environment.


Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor of Science Degree or higher in Metallurgy, Metallurgical Engineering, or another technical field.
  • Two years of experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Knowledge of ASTM, and automotive steel specifications.
  • Ability to work with individuals at all levels of the organization and utilize the internal knowledge base to solve technical problems.
  • Working knowledge of steel products and steel manufacturing process.
  • Self-starter with exceptional data analysis skills.
  • Proficient in the advanced features of Microsoft Office products: Word and Excel.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • 5+ years’ experience in the steel industry.
  • Proven track record of leading safety, quality, and process improvement teams within a manufacturing environment.
