On-call Facilitator II, Afterschool Tinkering

SUMMARY

To be considered for this position, applicants must have experience as a Facilitator I with the Tinkering Afterschool program adding up to either:

  • three consecutive semesters, or
  • four cumulative semesters, if not consecutive

OR two consecutive semesters of experience as Facilitator Explainer.


The Exploratorium’s Tinkering Studio team is a collection of artists, scientists, developers, educators, and facilitators who experiment with tools, materials, and technologies in playful and creative ways. The Tinkering Afterschool program brings tinkering experiences to a diverse audience of youth in partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco.

Facilitators use their facilitation skills to work with learners, mentor younger facilitators, assist lead staff with program needs, contribute to reflection and documentation of the work, and prepare and maintain materials.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Facilitate STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) and tinkering-based activities, public programs, workshops and events for youth and other program participants
  • Support and mentor Facilitators-in-Training and those in Facilitator I role
  • Support participants by modeling facilitation best practices for other educators
  • Participate in collaborative programming both internally and externally
  • Liaise with external program partners by maintaining professional relationships and joining check-in meetings with Clubhouse staff
  • Co-lead in the design of project ideas and curriculum through research, prototyping, and R&D
  • Co-lead in the development of facilitation ideas and techniques that model the tinkering approach
  • Lead the maintenance and organization of materials and storage spaces
  • Co-lead in professional development sessions and trainings to build communication, belonging, and collaboration
  • Document research efforts of the Tinkering Afterschool program, including planning and prototyping sessions, environmental design, and workshop facilitation practices and interactions
  • Contribute to presentations and/or materials of program work that are shared internally and externally: at conferences, convenings, or workshops
  • Other related duties as assigned


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

At least three consecutive semesters (or four cumulative semesters) of experience as Facilitator I with the Tinkering Afterschool program at the Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco or two consecutive semesters of experience as Facilitator Explainer.

  • Experience facilitating workshops and activities for the Tinkering Afterschool program
  • Demonstrated ability to encourage positive interaction and cooperation between students/participants
  • Strong organizational, communication, behavioral management and problem-solving skills
  • Proficiency or demonstrated enthusiasm for learning with hand tools and power tools
  • Ability to work on some weekends, evenings, and early mornings
  • Demonstrated experience and ability for leadership amongst Facilitation team, and in supporting professional and intellectual growth in colleagues as well as participants
