Job Title: Optical Engineer/Scientist

Job Description: As an Optical Engineer/Scientist with NSWCDD you will Join a multidisciplinary team of optical scientists/engineers, mechanical, electrical, and opto-mechanical engineers in the design, development, and implementation of optical systems for high energy laser applications.
- You will evaluate existing designs and standard Commercial Off the Shelf (COTS) products such as imaging lenses, opto-mechanical components, beam expanders, military and scientific cameras, etc. for application into high energy laser applications.
- You will work with external vendors to develop and fabricate custom optical devices to meet specified performance from internal trades and concept studies. This includes optical mirror, lens, coating, and laser vendors.
- You will research, develop, and apply optical engineering theories and techniques for optical system design and architecture.
- You will define appropriate design, analysis, and verification/test for components in an optical system.
- You will support fabrication, assembly, and test of optical components through system laboratory and field testing.
Qualifications:
- Master of Science in Physics or Engineering and at least 1 year of relevant experience, or Bachelor of Science in Physics or Engineering and at least 3 years relevant experience.
- Strong demonstration of understanding and demonstrated implementation of optical principals and fundamentals.
- Ability to investigate and independently analyze solutions to complex optical problems.
- Significant experience with optical design and software such as Zemax, FRED, or similar applications.
- Experience in optical component specification and characterization, such as optical windows, fold mirrors, beam splitters, wedges, and laser beam expanders.
- Laboratory experience with optical test equipment applicable to laser source characterization, such as power meters, photo-diodes, cameras, wavefront sensors, spectrometers, and beam profilers.
- Experience in alignment of optical systems.
- Experience compiling technical reports and presentations
- Effective communication skills, both written and oral.
- Ability to work in a fast paced, collaborative environment.

- You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance.
