Under direction supervision of Pediatric Ophthalmologist, we are seeking a Orthoptist Apprentice to perform diagnostic tests and treats patients with eye muscle disorders. Assists in daily management of Pediatric Ophthalmology Clinics.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Takes patient ocular and medical history, including medications and allergies.
Measures and records both distance and near visual acuity.
Neutralizes glasses using a lensometer or other appropriate equipment.
Tests color vision and depth perception.
Screens for presence of strabismus.
Checks pupillary response to light, accommodation, and for presence of an afferent pupillary defect.
Performs slit lamp examination.
Screens for glaucoma by measuring intraocular pressure using applanation tonometer.
Performs refraction and retinoscopy using retinoscope, phoropter, loose lenses, and automated refractor.
Checks central and peripheral visual fields using Amsler Grid, Goldman perimeter or Humphrey visual field machines.
Performs keratometry.
Instills eye drops under physicians' direction.
Schedules appointments for staff and clinic, when appropriate.
Performs other duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Requires a professional level of knowledge of orthoptics as acquired through completion of bachelor's Degree and orthoptic training.
Must obtain American Orthoptic Council (AOC) as well as the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO) Certification within 15 months of hire date. Certifications must be renewed on time and current.
Preferred Qualifications
Requires acquisition of current understanding of ocular motility disorders.
Must have analytical ability.
Must have interpersonal skills necessary to communicate with patients.
Ability to work with sometimes fearful children and modify examination depending on cooperation.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers.
