Park Ranger

Duties

  • Executes visitor assistance and service programs. Patrols public lands and waters to prevent unauthorized use, trespass, and destruction of property and resources, ensure compliance with policies and regulations, and protect project land, water, and other environmental resources.
  • Develops interpretive program material of a historical, natural resources, or other project related nature.
  • Conducts independent research of topics using sources such as records, books, files, and interviews with people who have personal knowledge of a particular site or event.
  • Assists the Natural Resource Specialist with plans for long-range environmental concerns of the lake and surrounding land area by collecting data regarding invasive species, directs volunteers in habitat and native plant restoration projects, provides expertise regarding nesting birds and seasonal waterfowl in regard to areas under development.
  • Assists with the execution of the Recreation Management Program at a lake project by issuing permits and monitoring permitted activities.
  • Provides guidance and advice to members of the team, to include lower graded Park Rangers and Volunteers.
  • Participates in a user fee program either as a fee collector, a designated collection officer's representative, or as a compliance inspector.

A physical exam may not be required if a comparable agency approved examination was performed within the last 12 months. The cost of the exam will be reimbursed by the agency.
  • You must possess or obtain certification in first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and blood-borne pathogens.
  • This position is designated as a Non-Sensitive low level position and requires a fully completed and favorably adjudicated National Agency Check with Inquiries (NACI).

Qualifications

In order to be rated as qualified for this position, the HR Office must be able to determine that you meet the education and/or general work experience requirement - this information must be clearly supported in the resume.

General experience at GS-04 is defined as experience in administrative, professional, technical, investigative, or other responsible work that provided a familiarity with natural or cultural history; fish or wildlife habitat characteristics; techniques of resource protection and use; recreational use of public lands and facilities; enforcement of laws, rules, or regulations; fire prevention techniques and fire suppression method; or the practice of interpersonal relations skills in dealing with the general public. Experience in substantive and relevant secretarial, clerical or trades and crafts work is also qualifying if pertinent to the position to be filled. Experience of a routine nature, such as typing, filing, maintaining records or other non-specialized tasks is not qualifying.

OR

Education: Two years of education above the high school level obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. Related course work is course work in natural resource management, natural sciences, earth science, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources.

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of by 60. Add the two percentages.

Specialized Experience is defined as experience that demonstrated the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform successfully the duties of the position to be filled. Experience may have been in technical, administrative, or scientific work, fish and wildlife management, recreation management, or other park-related work. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include, but are not limited to the following: Park guide or tour leader work; law enforcement or investigative work; archeological or historical preservation research work; forestry and /or fire management work in a park, recreation or conservation area; management, assistant, or program specialist work involving the development and implementation of policy related to protection, conservation, or management of park areas or similar operations. EXPERIENCE THAT ONLY INCLUDES LAW ENFORCEMENT ACTIVITIES MAY NOT BE CONSIDERED QUALIFYING AS SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE. These examples are not all inclusive.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

You must meet all Eligibility and Qualification requirements, including any selective placement factors if applicable, by 12/31/2023.

Education

This vacancy announcement allows substituting education for experience. You must submit a copy of college transcript(s) (unofficial copy is acceptable) to support claimed education if substituting education for experience. Transcripts must include the name of the college or university and date the degree was conferred. A typed list of courses, grades, semester/quarter hours, GPA, etc. will not be accepted. Non-submission may result in being rated not-qualified for the position.

Foreign Education: To receive credit for education completed outside the United States, you must show proof that the education has been submitted to a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign educational credentials and such education has been deemed at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education programs. How You Will Be Evaluated

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

Category rating and selection procedures will be used to evaluate applications from this announcement.
