Berkeley Lab’s (LBNL) Molecular Biophysics and Integrated Bioimaging Division (MBIB) has an opening for a Part Time Research Associate to join Polyzos Lab. In this role, you will perform semi-routine animal experiments including the maintenance and upkeep of the Polyzos’ Lab animal colony (mouse). This project involves research on Huntington’s disease (neurodegenerative disease) testing a potential therapeutic.
What You Will Do:
- Perform semi-routine data collection/analysis experiments involving mice.
- Support the treatment of the animal model (mice) with the potential therapeutic agent and testing of mice for response by preparing animals, treatment, and tests with minimal analysis.
- Perform maintenance of the Polyzos’ animal colony including basic animal husbandry, animal treatments and regular health checks.
- On behalf of the Polyzos Lab, interact with the Animal Facilities and the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) staff to maintain Animal Protocols and the receival of new animals.
- Assist with Lab chemicals including records, inventory, and disposal.
- Assist with Lab equipment inventory, lab digital inventories, and gas supplies.
- Maintain an accurate and detailed scientific notebook of all experiments performed and ensure other members will be able to replicate the results.
What is Required:
- A minimum of 1 year of related experience with animal experiments.
- Experience with animal handling (mice), animal husbandry, animal treatments (i.e., injections), and vivisections.
- Experience with mouse behavioral tests (i.e., bar test, rotarod, and water maze).
- Proficiency with office software including Microsoft Office Suite and Google Applications.
- Strong oral and written communication skills including the ability to maintain detailed and accurate laboratory documents and records.
Desired Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree (or equivalent knowledge/training) in Biology, BioEngineering, Neuroscience, or a related field.
- Familiarity with scientific data analysis (i.e., creating graphs, tables, and performing basic statistics).
- Experience with tissue collection.
- Experience with generation and maintenance of primary cell lines from mouse tissue.

- This is a part time 50%, non-exempt (hourly paid) from overtime, 13 month Term (benefits eligible) appointment with the possibility of renewal up to a maximum of 5 years total or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs.

- This position has a targeted salary range of $23.58-$33.29 per hour for job code 381.1. Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.

- This position will operate onsite Monday - Friday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm at approximately 50% time (20 hours per week) with 4 hours per day at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA 94720. Work schedules are dependent on business needs.
