Electrical Diagnostic Technician / Electrician –Car Equipment PATH


Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of Car Equipment Division Supervisor or Foreman, the incumbent performs skilled electrical work in the troubleshooting, repair, maintenance, diagnostics, and testing of a wide variety of electrical and electronic equipment on PATH fleet of railcars. Some specific functions and duties of an Electrician at Car Equipment Division are: Troubleshoot, test, repair, rewire electrical and electronic equipment of the railcar subsystems such as traction control, HVAC, lighting, communications, auxiliary power supply, electronic signage, and all other electrical/electronic system/subsystems that make up the whole railcar; performs extensive fault log downloads from the railcar using computerized Portable Test Equipment (PTE) to conduct troubleshooting and repair of railcar failures/defects; performs removal, installation, assembly and disassembly of various railcar systems/subsystems; performs repair and overhaul of railcar equipment -away from the railcar- in Electrical Shop (i.e., bench-work); uses electrical and electronic test equipment for troubleshooting and repair of railcar defects/failures; cleans electrical and electronic assemblies/subassemblies including Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs), equipment covers/enclosures, motors, and all parts/components associated with railcar systems; uses hand and power tools, both electrical and pneumatic in performance of above duties. Work is performed in accordance with established service and maintenance procedures in effect in PATH, in conformance with FRA and OSHA rules and regulations.

The foregoing is not exclusive and is not meant to describe all those duties which may be assigned to an Electrician pursuant to the agreement between PATH and RITU.


Qualifications

Candidates must present the following qualifications to be considered eligible for this position:


  • High School Diploma or GED from an accredited institution.
  • Four (4) years paid full-time work experience as a journeyman in the Electrical trade* -OR- completion of a registered Car Equipment Electrician Apprentice Program.
  • The Electrical trade includes but is not limited to: reading electrical prints; wiring/rewiring components; working from and handling printed circuits; utilizing test instruments, precision meters, and tools and equipment associated with electrical work; troubleshooting and resolving electrical problems; motor control troubleshooting and diagnostics, building wiring, security alarm systems installation, troubleshooting and/or repair, elevator maintenance.

Selection Process

Selected qualified candidates will be invited to participate in a in the assessment process which consists of written and practical examinations.

Written Test: The written test will consist of electrical technical questions designed to assess the candidate’s knowledge, skills, and abilities regarding such factors as electrical theory, motor controls, safety, and electrical print/schematics reading.

Performance Test: The performance test Will consist of a series of practical problems designed to assess key competencies related to the performance of the Electrician position such as circuit wiring, circuit design, troubleshooting, electrical equipment/assembly testing, electrical print/schematics, and computer skills (i.e., use of computerized Portable Test Equipment).

The Port Authority Trans Hudson (PATH) operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week all year round. Electricians in Car Equipment work a 40-hour week, which includes working rotating shifts, days, afternoons, nights, weekends, and holidays, and during inclement weather and emergencies. Electricians in Car Equipment work at the Harrison Car Equipment facility in Harrison, NJ.

Electrician Car Equipment starts at Step I - $46.28 (per union contract) and get step increases.
