The Role

The Payroll Manager will be responsible for the full payroll function, including month-end journal entries and account reconciliations as well as helping to develop and strengthen internal controls and processes related to payroll. Ideal candidates will have a background working on both payroll and accounting in industry and the ability and desire to work in a fast-paced and dynamic environment. This position will be an individual contributor that collaborates well with HR, Accounting and other business functions across the company. The Payroll Manager will report to directly to the VP Controller and will play an instrumental role in the financial growth of the Company.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities/Requirements

  • Full-cycle processing of multi-state US payroll on a semi-monthly basis using Paychex or other payroll software as appropriate, including 401K activity
  • Manage the timecard submission and approval process, including follow up with managers on any timecard questions or issues
  • Ensure accurate and timely processing of payroll updates including new hires, terminations and changes
  • Prepare accounting journal entries related to payroll
  • Prepare monthly reconciliations of payroll accounts
  • Maintain the Payroll inbox and serve as the main contact for all payroll related matters, providing timely responses to all requests both internal and external customers
  • Maintain appropriate payroll policies and procedures and ensure compliance with SOX internal controls
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local legal payroll requirements
  • Assist with financial statement audits and reviews for payroll-related requests
  • Work with state tax departments to set up new accounts as necessary when hiring employees in new states
  • Partner effectively with both internal and external business partners to address and resolve payroll issues
  • Assist with year-end benefits audit and reporting
  • Manage key annual payroll-related audits (e.g., 401k, workers compensation)
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements and automation and drive the implementation of solutions
  • Serve as a backup for the Accounts Payable function
  • Ad hoc projects as required

Education, Knowledge & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Accounting or Finance
  • 5-10 years of relevant payroll work experience
  • Highly proficient with Excel and overall M/S Office proficiency
  • Elite attention to detail and accuracy
  • Professional, responsive and customer-focused working relationships with all levels of employees
  • Ability to clearly communicate verbally and in writing
  • Positive team attitude with a willingness to work on both smaller and large tasks to help get the job done
  • Candidate with experience in a fast-growing or start-up company is preferred
  • Experience with Paychex and NetSuite is preferred
