Land Transactions Intern

BASIC FUNCTION OR PURPOSE OF POSITION 

POST is offering a flexible internship opportunity (either 6 months at 40 hours per week or 12 months at 20 hours per week) in support of POST’s work to preserve open space across the San Francisco Peninsula and South Bay. This is a terrific opportunity to gain experience in the nonprofit sector with a nationally recognized land conservation organization. The intern will become part of and contribute to a high-functioning team and gain insights into how land trusts and our public agency partners identify, acquire, and protect properties to achieve regional conservation goals.
 
The Land Transactions Intern position is responsible for supporting many aspects of POST’s land protection work, including the identification of project opportunities that further POST’s conservation goals and the continued growth and improvement of project tracking tools and records. This position reports to the Senior Manager, Real Property and Projects, and works closely with the Real Estate Specialist. This position also actively collaborates with the Land Transactions Coordinator, and supports other members of the Transactions team and Land Department.
 
POST is currently a combined remote and hybrid workplace, and our policy regarding hybrid work schedules continues to evolve. We expect to maintain flexibility regarding schedules and hybrid working arrangements. The successful candidate for this job must live within a reasonable commuting distance to POST’s Palo Alto office, and lands on the San Francisco Peninsula and in the South Bay, to facilitate regular attendance at meetings and for land transaction site visits.
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND FUNCTIONS OF THIS JOB
 
CORE DUTIES AND FUNCTIONS
  • Tracks, maintains, verifies, and compiles information and data from various sources (including open market listings, recent sales, and past appraisals) to support the review of appraisals, comparable sales, and overall market trends in consultation with the Real Estate Specialist, Land Transactions Coordinator, and other Land Department staff. 
  • Collects information for and supports Transactions staff in responding to requests for information related to projects and property-related inquiries. 
  • Develops informational materials for current, new, and potential transaction projects in consultation with the Real Estate Specialist, Land Transactions Coordinator, and other Land Department staff.
  • Assists in maintaining and improving of POST’s transactional records, including data entry and validation in consultation with the Land Transactions Coordinator.
  • Creates, maintains, and/or improves land transaction templates and best practices/ guidance docs for presentations, internal memos, property summaries, and other purposes.  
  • Works in alignment with POST’s organizational values and its commitment to creating an equitable and inclusive culture.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED TO PERFORM THIS JOB

  • Relevant education or experience related to land conservation or real estate with a demonstrated interest in both.
  • Experience and strength in seeking out, compiling, organizing and reviewing information and data from existing and new sources.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in managing and presenting data.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and/or Google Sheets with the ability to effectively compile, sort, and analyze data, as well as create clear and professional tables, charts, and graphs for reporting purposes.
  • Proficient in Microsoft PowerPoint and/or Google Slides.
  • Self-motivated, creative problem solver who is comfortable asking for help.
  • Growth mindset and experience collaborating in teams with diverse backgrounds.
  • College degree in a relevant field of study, or equivalent and relevant work experience and/or certifications will be considered in lieu of a college degree.
  • Passion for the outdoors and natural resources.
  • Valid driver’s license and insurable driving record. 
 PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS       
 
  • Requires regular communication with others using telephone, computer, and video technology, and ability to interact effectively with digital and printed materials.
  • Requires the ability to drive company vehicles to distant locations.
  • Requires the ability to traverse uneven, rough, or steep terrain and exposure to outdoor elements.
  • There are occasional events or duties that occur outside regular work hours.

Pay and benefits: 
​​​This is a temporary position and carries no discretionary benefits except for state mandated sick leave. Exact timing and scheduling can be flexible to accommodate the appropriate candidate. Pay is $​​25.00 per hour. POST’s office is located in downtown Palo Alto near public transportation, and we will provide a Caltrain Go Pass if needed.
