Job Description:
ABOUT POMONA COLLEGE: Located near Los Angeles, California, Pomona College is widely regarded as one of the nation's premier liberal arts colleges. Established in 1887, Pomona College is known for small classes, a challenging curriculum, close relationships between students and faculty, and a range of student research and leadership opportunities. Pomona is a member of The Claremont Colleges.
POSITION SUMMARY: The Persian coach at Oldenborg is a position that works in conjunction with the Persian faculty examiner and the Associate Director, Language Instruction, to coach and mentor students in the Oldenborg Persian self-instructional language program, or SILP. The coach need not be formally trained in language teaching nor does the coach assess student performance (give grades). The information below pertains to the coach’s duties per course section. Oldenborg normally offers two sections of Persian per semester (depending upon student enrollment) and each section is 0.5 credits, P/NC (Pass/No Credit). Classes are small as enrollment can vary between 1-5 students per section. Classes meet in Oldenborg.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Reporting directly to the Associate Director, Language Instruction, the Persian Coach performs the following essential duties and responsibilities:
-
The faculty examiner (off-site) selects the textbook, prepares the syllabus, uploads materials to the Sakai site, prepares a midterm, final, and oral exam and then also assesses them.
-
The coach follows the directives of the faculty examiner and meets with the students two hours each week as specified in the 5C class schedule.
-
An additional one hour per week is allocated for office hours (arranged at the coach’s discretion) and one additional hour per week is also allocated for hosting a Persian language table during the lunch-hour, with the option available to host up to two language tables per week.
-
Oldenborg requires the coach be available for at least one of the two Persian language lunch-tables in the Oldenborg dining hall each week and will also cover the cost of the meal for attendance.
-
The coach is to speak Persian with the students at all times (in the classroom and at language tables) and is expected to maintain a professional, constructive demeanor that specifically facilitates students’ target language production and more broadly encourages their interest in the Persian language and culture. The coach will be expected to communicate regularly with the Associate Director, Language Instruction, and faculty examiner so that the three-person team can work together to promote Persian SILP at Oldenborg and to provide a constructive and encouraging classroom experience for the students.
QUALIFICATIONS:
-
Must be a native or near-native speaker of the Persian language and also be able to demonstrate corresponding knowledge of life and culture in Persian-speaking countries.
-
Ideal candidate will possess experience in U.S. academic settings, so that they can successfully work in a classroom setting with undergraduate students and in meeting Oldenborg’s academic and administrative expectations.
