The mission of the Jean Mayer USDA-Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging (HNRCA) at Tufts is to promote healthy aging through nutrition science to empower people seeking to enjoy long, active, and independent lives. The HNRCA is one the largest research centers in the world studying nutrition and its relationship to healthy aging and physical activity. We are one of six centers supported by the USDA. The HNRCA investigators conduct some of the world's most advanced studies on nutrition and aging making significant contributions to U.S. and international nutritional and physical activity recommendations, public policy, and clinical healthcare.
The Metabolic Research Unit (MRU) is one of the Scientific Core Units at the HNRCA directed toward facilitating and supporting the clinical aspects of data collection with human study participants for the HNRCA's research teams. The MRU services cover study areas of participant recruitment and enrollment, nutrition services from our metabolic kitchen, nursing services, and study coordination services. Research nurses and support staff implement research protocols and continually assess and monitor free-living and resident study participants. Registered dietitians and dietary support staff develop and implement the dietary component of research protocols, which include strict feeding protocols created in the MRU research kitchen with careful food intake monitoring throughout the duration of each study.
The MRU Phlebotomist is responsible for various tasks related to the collection of research data as delegated by and under the supervision of a registered nurse or study physician. Responsible for the well-being of study participants during both eligibility screening and study participation. Responsible for the collection of screening and study data including but not limited to participant interview and instruction, phlebotomy, EKG, anthropometric measurements, height, weight, BMI determination, waist circumference, hip/waist ratio, skin folds, vital signs, RMR, glucose monitoring, urine, stool, breath and saliva sample collection. Responsible for the collection and proper handling of human tissue specimens, as well as delivery of specimens to various HNRCA laboratories. Additional responsibilities include assessment of venous access, electronic record keeping with meticulous documentation of specimen collection, telephone work, filing, supply restocking, bed making, chart management and data entry.
This is a part-time role from 7:00 am - 11:00 am, Monday - Friday.
