The general salary range for this position is $58 – 68k. Salary offers will be commensurate with experience, qualifications, skills, training, and education.

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation’s most effective animal protection organization, is seeking a Photo Editor for the Brand and Visuals department. In this position you will maintain photo assets and help the Communications and Marketing teams tell the story of the organization through powerful and engaging imagery of our work and of the animals we seek to protect. Provides staff with a growing library of high-quality photo assets and assistance in photo research and image color correction. Provides external sources, such as the media, with access to our photo assets to broaden our reach and brand awareness in the public, as well as to explore generating revenue from the organization’s photography. Maintains ethical standards for photography on all channels, working with programs to uphold organizational guidelines and policies for image use and reproduction.

Responsibilities:
  • Manages the organization’s digital asset management system. Contacts sources, tracks down permissions/usage rights, tracks down necessary approvals from celebrities, law enforcement agencies, and other organizations involved in our professional photo shoots. Creates new user accounts, assists staff with using the system (uploading, searching, downloading, creating collections, submitting photo requests, etc.), researches and assists staff with stock photography purchases, researches images in the photo library to fulfill staff needs for priority programs, and makes image metadata adjustments when needed to ensure quality control in captioning and labeling;
  • Oversees the distribution of the organization’s imagery to a wide variety of external sources. Works closely with the Media Relations team to research, curate and provide our best imagery to the media through the organization’s newsroom for breaking news situations, press releases, and other priority initiatives and campaigns. Explores ways to monetize images created and owned by the company;
  • Conducts photo research for All Animals, HumanePro, humanesociety.org and all affiliate websites, and other digital and print projects for the organization. Works closely with the Design, Video, Editorial, Marketing and Digital teams to collaborate on ideas and concepts for photo needs for cross-channel projects and campaigns. Curates photo collections and lightboxes by using creative skills and a professionally trained photographic eye to evaluate the moments, creativity, composition, lighting and quality of images. Works with Marketing, Communications, Brand and Visuals teams to ensure the timely selection of powerful imagery for important deadline projects;
  • Manages the post-production editing for the organization by using photo editing software to color and exposure correct images. Includes the blurring of faces in undercover investigation images when necessary to protect the identity or safety of staff;
  • Serves as a back-up staff photographer on-site and in the field when available and as needed. Serves as a back-up manager of professional freelance photography assignments for the organization.
Qualifications and Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Photography or related field or equivalent work experience in a related field required;
  • A minimum of two (2) years of work experience as an Associate Photo Editor, Photo Editor, or Digital Asset Manager required;
  • High-quality knowledge of digital asset management and photo editing programs. Expert understanding of photography principles and licensing agreements;
  • Clear understanding of brand standards and management. The ability to oversee and evolve brands as organizational goals evolve;
  • Keen eye for the selection of imagery that is in line with our organizational goals and brand standards. Experience with photography color correction;
  • Excellent creative thinking skills with the ability to continuously innovate;
  • Expert knowledge of the newest photography software, techniques, and current trends. Experience working in a Macintosh environment with excellent technical knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office. Understanding of print production and printing processes required;
  • Comfortable in a fast-paced environment with frequent deadlines; high energy, self-motivated and proactive;
  • Ability to multitask and be flexible with regard to workload and assignments;
  • Ability to exercise judgment;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills;
  • Attention to detail and commitment to excellence demonstrated by the delivery of quality and timely outcomes;
  • Ability to work both independently and as an effective team member in a team environment;
  • Strong interest in animal protection issues preferred.
