The Student Union, Inc. is 501(c)(3) nonprofit auxiliary that maintains three major facilities at San José State University in downtown San José, California. These facilities include the Diaz Compean Student Union Building, the Provident Credit Union Event Center, and the Spartan Recreation and Aquatic Center. The Student Union, Inc. functions as part of the Student Affairs Division on campus, and is governed by a Board of Directors made up of a student majority, faculty, and administrators.

Job Summary:
Under the general supervision of the Marketing & Information Services Manager and the Marketing Supervisor, responsible for the coordination and development of photographic needs in support of the Student Union, Inc., including stock, architectural, portrait, and design photography.
Essential Functions and Tasks
- Plan, analyze, and execute principal photography for Student Union, Inc.’s Graphics Department, including stock photography, architectural photography, portraiture, and design photography.
- Select appropriate angles, lighting, background, and primary subject matter to enhance desired features to produce the most aesthetically effective and informative photograph.
- Manage the processing and use of images, review technical problems, and check for quality.
- Work directly with external clients, department managers, and SJSU faculty & staff to coordinate availability, staging, and protocol.
- Responsible for ensuring the cosmetic quality of Student Union, Inc. photographic needs.
- Prepare processed photographs for both print and digital use, from large format banners to web thumbnails and social media.
- Maintain and curate Graphics Department photo archive.
- Manage photographic workflow on a daily basis and self-assign tasks when a photographic need is identified.
- Contribute to creative process, from conceptual design phase to end product.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs)
- Produce high quality digital shots for use in marketing and advertising.
- Ability to coordinate multiple tasks and projects.
- Must be detail-oriented, self-motivate.
- Ability to collaborate with other design team members to achieve weekly and monthly goals.
- Knowledge of Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom, and InDesign software programs.
- Understanding of lighting, including strobe, tungsten, and ambient lighting.
- Understanding of a variety of DSLR and medium format digital camera systems.
- Ability to employ customer service skills with photography subjects and with department managers, SJSU faculty, and SJSU staff.
- Ability to work with external clients, such as entertainment industry clients, to coordinate appropriate protocols to photograph during events.
- Must be available nights and weekends for Student Union, Inc. events and SJSU campus events.
Qualifications and Specifications:
1. Required
-
Must be a matriculated SJSU student.
- Must demonstrate ability to take photographs with a wide range of implementation: architectural, portraiture, stock, etc.
- Must be able to demonstrate previous works through a portfolio.
2. Preferred
- Currently enrolled in the Art Department or Journalism & Mass Communications Department at SJSU as an upper-division photography or photojournalism major.
Minimum Hourly Salary: $18.25 - Maximum Hourly Salary: $21.13
- This position is non-exempt from the provisions of Section 1 of the California Industrial Welfare Commission Orders.
- In general, the position works a schedule based on business needs and requires early morning, evening and weekend work.
- When school is in session student assistant may work up to, but not in excess of 20 hours per week (among all concurrent positions).
- When classes are not in session (i.e. summer break) student assistant may work up to, but not in excess of 40 hours per week.
Benefits
This position is employed through Student Union at San Jose State University which offers employees to receive 24 hours of sick pay during the calendar year.

Background Check and Fingerprinting
Student Union employees are required to undergo and completed a successful background check that includes verification of employment and education, as well as a check of criminal records for employment. Candidates for positions where the employee will come in regular contact with minors and cash management will be required to be fingerprinted. This policy includes emergency hires and may also be applicable to volunteers depending on the work they will be doing.
In some cases the background check will include a credit check and/or a Department of Motor Vehicles check, as well as a check of licenses and certificates when applicable. All background checks are conducted through the Student Union third-party vendor, Accurate Background
CSU COVID Policy
Employees must comply with the CSU Vaccination Policy ID #11030468 and SJSU Presidential Directive upon hiring.
