PHP/Python Developer

Helical Levity plays a vital role in solving the global cyber security skills shortage by inspiring, educating and training a diverse group of young adults. Our flagship product, CyberStart, is an industry leading educational game used by over 200k students. These students are encouraged to ‘hack’/break-into live running systems that we develop as hands-on technical challenges.
We work with a wide variety of institutions such as schools, governments in the UK and US, as well as enthusiasts who work with us directly that are all looking to help solve the cyber security skills shortage or continue their own professional development.

The engineering team have recently rewritten and launched a brand-new version of CyberStart from the ground up using Symfony; we are now looking to grow our business by hiring an enthusiastic Full Stack PHP/Python Developer to join our talented team and help shape the future development of our world class product.

Key Responsibilities

As PHP/Python Developer, you'll be used to working as part of an agile team. You'll hold an understanding of multiple development techniques and technologies. We're looking for someone who can contribute ideas, deliver solutions, and help scale a proven, successful business.

Typical activities in your week may include:
  • Writing testable, maintainable and high-quality code. You’ll need an understanding of agile development practices (Scrum) to deliver features and improvements. You will often be pair programming or tackling issues as a group but also individually.
  • Being cross-functional, you will enjoy working as a team in either PHP, Python, Data, JS/CSS or DevOps realms depending on business priorities. While we don’t expect you to be an expert in all these areas, a willingness to improve, learn and having a general passion for technology is ideal.
  • Collaborate with the team to help define technical solutions, clarify requirements and suggest areas of improvement.
  • Reviewing, verifying, testing and deploying new builds.
As a team we take great pride in maintaining the high standards of our new product and we are looking for developers with a passion for quality and cooperation.

Skills, Knowledge and Experience

  • You'll have 3+ years of experience working in back-end software development. With a strong applied knowledge of PHP, preferably with at least 2 years experience with Symfony. You will also be willing to learn Python or have some prior experience with it.
  • You can write and maintain unit tests. We're looking for someone with a good understanding of TDD processes and techniques.
  • You have built applications using DDD. Domain driven design is a core principle of our software development strategy.
  • You have an agile and team orientated mindset. Pair programming, mob programming or similar. A strong ability to communicate and collaborate between engineers is key to help us continue to build a high quality product.

Desirable Skills

We've got a diverse tech stack, so whilst we don't expect you to have an understanding or experience with all of them, knowledge of any of the below would be a benefit:
  • Development Languages: PHP 7+ (Symfony), Python, JS ES6, CSS
  • Databases: MySQL, MongoDB & DynamoDB
  • Cloud Services: AWS, S3, Lambda, Docker
  • Development Tools: Git, GitHub Actions
  • Development Techniques: DDD, TDD, BDD, Scrum, Agile, Pair/Mob Programming
Experience with DDD and BDD are highly desirable.

That's why our team built CyberStart, an innovative platform that gamifies cyber security education, and has now been used by over 200k students. In this, students take on the role of an agent in the cyber protection agency and get to hack, forensicate and code break their way through levels filled with a rich narrative, immersive design and realistic security labs.

Our team combines a team of passionate and talented designers, developers and security researchers. Most of the team work remotely, but we do have an amazing office in Ascott- under-Wychwood, if an office environment is preferable for you!
