Planned Parenthood Association of Utah (PPAU) is a non-profit family planning agency and a leader in sexual and reproductive healthcare, advocacy, and education in the state of Utah. We provide high-quality, affordable sexual and reproductive health care for Utahns/people in eight health centers across the state.

Position Summary:

Develops and leads Students United for Reproductive Freedom (SURF) group at Utah State University in order to promote awareness and activism around sexual and reproductive health and rights. Responsibilities include: formal registration and recognition as campus group; holding regular membership meetings; group development; organizing a wide range of campus activities; maintaining a consistent group presence on campus; and effectively communicating messages around sexual and reproductive health, rights and freedom to support the mission and advocacy work of Planned Parenthood Association of Utah and Planned Parenthood Action Council of Utah.

 

To promote success in the position, SURF Presidents will receive training in a variety of areas, including: advocacy & organizing; political messaging; cross movement work, outreach; program evaluation; and on-going professional development opportunities tailored to the President’s interests and goals.

Essential Job Functions:
  • Maintain and expand established SURF group at your college/university, which includes:
  • Recruiting and developing a student group for ongoing involvement with an intersectional and equitable approach
  • Regularly scheduling and staffing information/advocacy tables on campus to recruit new student members and distribute reproductive health care information
  • Scheduling and facilitating SURF meetings at least monthly to implement goals of the group and activate students around sexual and reproductive health care and reproductive rights
  • Meeting bi-weekly with Director of Community Engagement to plan, review, and evaluate campus engagement activities and events
  • Meeting weekly regularly?  with other SURF Presidents to promote resource-sharing and collaboration
  • Attending any pertinent training at Planned Parenthood Association of Utah to learn how to effectively communicate  and collaborate with diverse groups about reproductive healthcare and rights and expand justice.
  • Identifying and developing a plan to access and utilize financial support from your University and other sources (includes submitting a yearly budget to student government for funding) 
  • Cultivating and developing relationships with other campus groups to work on common goals, events, and maintaining a presence on campus and on social media.
  • Working with Planned Parenthood staff to develop short and long-term goals of the established SURF group
  • Working with Planned Parenthood staff to conduct health information sessions for college groups including Resident Advisors, Sororities, Fraternities and other groups around reproductive health care and rights.
  • Assisting staff with special projects on as-needed basis
  • Documenting completed hours & events on a weekly basis


Minimum Qualifications:
  • Must be currently enrolled as a student at Southern Utah University.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Commitment to confidentiality, honesty, and ethics
  • Computer experience — MS  Office, Canva, and social media a plus
  • Ability to initiate and complete tasks in a timely manner
  • Experience working in collaboration with other individuals and community organizations helpful
  • Commitment to the mission/philosophy of Planned Parenthood
  • Commitment to increasing equity, inclusion and belonging for club members and on campus.
  • Ability to work between 8 and 20 hours a week (flexible based on student’s schedule)


SURF presidents will receive a stipend of up to $2,000 per semester based on hours worked.
