Principal Engineer (Cedar Pay)

The Role

Cedar is making major improvements to the patient financial experience. Our technology platform leverages data science to engage patients and help them understand the cost of their care. The Pay Pillar of Engineering is building Cedar Pay, our flagship product at Cedar, that helps patients with their entire post-visit billing experience.

As we continue to rapidly scale our client base and mature our product offering, we are in need of a Principal Engineer as the technical lead for our Cedar Pay product. This position will work on technical strategy and architecture, being responsible for creating and leading at the pillar level and being a key collaborator at the company-wide level. You will also work closely with all engineers in the pillar, especially team leads, to ensure we continue to build high-quality, scalable products and underlying technologies.

Responsibilities

You will:

  • Take ownership of technical strategy at the pillar level and be part of a small team of engineering leaders who own it company-wide.
  • Play a leading role in defining our technical architecture, making decisions aligned with our strategy and values.
  • Identify, sponsor and execute projects that have company-wide impact.
  • Maintain a broad and deep understanding of our product and technologies.
  • You’ll support engineers with technical mentorship, delegate tasks, and perform hands-on coding and code reviews.
  • Support your counterparts on the product and commercial teams on understanding and solving client problems, formulating technical strategy, and enhancing the Cedar Pay product.
  • Mentor engineers at a variety of levels (junior through senior). Be a role model and trusted advisor for passionate and driven team members.
  • Drive org-level changes to improve existing processes, infrastructure, architecture, business problems, developer happiness, etc. Think broadly about opportunities to level-up the engineering org.

What we look for in a candidate:

  • 15+ years of professional software development experience.
  • Full-stack experience building complex web applications at scale.
  • Experience working with business leaders to deliver company-wide impact.
  • Experience leading large technical projects that span multiple engineering teams and require multi-functional teamwork.
  • Strong computer science fundamentals - a degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field, or similar experience.
  • Experience mentoring engineers across all levels.
  • Experience owning a business-critical application, standing up complex new systems, and building for supportability and long-term maintenance.
  • Ability to help the team ship by guiding teammates through making practical tradeoffs in high stakes situations, and jumping in to help get through a prod blocker.
  • Expertise in at least one major language.
  • Ability to explain sophisticated technical concepts simply.

Compensation Range and Benefits:

  • Salary/Hourly Rate Range*: $238,000 - $280,000
  • This role is equity eligible
