JOB TITLE: Printshop Assistant

DEPARTMENT: Fine Arts - Printmaking

REPORTS TO: Director of Operations, Printmaking and the Printshop Manager

POSITION OVERVIEW: This position supports the Printmaking faculty and students and represents one of four assistants who are on duty whenever the printshop is open. The assistant will oversee the printmaking shops and computers while an instructor is teaching a class, and assist students and faculty as necessary.

WEEKLY SCHEDULE: This is a part-time position, 25 hours per week, and 3 weekly shifts.


DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Monitor all activity in the shop and answer student questions.
  • Work as part of a team, sharing routine duties and responsibilities with fellow assistants.
  • Assist printmaking faculty with class demonstrations and the introduction of procedures.
  • Help students translate digital and hand drawn images into color separations for use with the various printmaking techniques.
  • Provide technical assistance to students working independently in the printshop.
  • Monitor and oversee student work habits, and cleanup while emphasizing safety.
  • Help students in the platemaking darkroom and explain platemaking procedures.
  • Restock and maintain inventories of supplies for ordering.
  • Answer telephone inquirees, take messages and schedule appointments.
  • Perform minor press adjustments and routine equipment maintenance.
  • Check out tools and equipment to students as well as relating safe work habits.
  • Record plate sales and conduct credit card sales.
  • Mix acids and oversee their safe use.
  • Help with deliveries and stocking of inks and emulsions.
  • Learn safety procedures, MSDS information and attend OSHA training.
  • Open the shop in the morning and check supply levels.
  • Ensure that all fans and machinery are off, and classrooms are locked at the end of the day.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be well versed in all areas of printmaking including silkscreen, lithography, etching, relief printing, letterpress, as well as platemaking and digital separation techniques.
  • Have experience working with Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign.
  • BFA required, MFA preferred.
