GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

The Helmer Informatics Lab, affiliated with the Athinoula A. Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging at Massachusetts General Hospital, is seeking a Programmer with a bachelor’s degree in physics, chemistry, neuroscience, cognitive science, mathematics, computer science or related field, for a full-time position building data management infrastructure and tools to support a wide variety of primarily imaging-based medical and scientific studies. The programmer will be working with a talented multidisciplinary team of programmers, web developers, and data curators. This position requires demonstrated competency in coding, maturity, attention to detail and excellent organizational skills. The successful applicant must be able to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment and balance multiple projects.

The projects served by these services all focus on knowledge discovery in the medical domain, from discovering new biomarkers to the testing of new interventions. These projects all have a public web presence and these portals serve both to make informational content available to the public as well as act as a front end for a web-based infrastructure for the management, movement, curation, and sharing of a large, heterogeneous data sets. The goal of several of these projects is to provide data to the larger scientific community so that the data may be reused, and new knowledge generated.

This position offers the opportunity to contribute to high-visibility scientific projects with the potential for high impact on patient care in a collegial, academic work environment, the opportunity to enhance a work portfolio with high visibility projects, and the opportunity to continuously learn new skills.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Contribute to the development and automatization of data management workflows used to collect, curate, and store study data.
  • Develop tools to automatically process imaging and data from other modalities
  • Learn and implement new technologies to expand the capabilities of the current infrastructure
  • Interact at times with users to troubleshoot issues
  • Contribute to the maintenance of the codebases for each supported project
  • Performing quality control on raw and processed data; build tools for automatic integrity checking of data
  • Create Visualizations of data collections

SKILLS & COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

  • Demonstrated expertise with the following:
    • Python and one or more scripting languages (bash, csh, etc.)
    • Linux operating systems
  • Experience in the processing of scientific data helpful
  • Demonstrated expertise using code management systems (e.g. Git)
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • English language fluency
  • Good verbal and written communication skills

EDUCATION:

Required: Bachelor's Degree

Field of Study/Additional Specialized Training: Physics and other physical sciences, computer science, mathematics, neuroscience, cognitive science, psychology, or related field; certification in Python programming of 3 years of related experience is required.

EXPERIENCE:

Required: One year of experience

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Day to day operations are performed at the Charlestown Navy Yard in an office setting.
