Department Background

Cornell University - an Ivy League institution with approximately 15,000 undergraduate and 10,000 graduate and professional students, and campuses in Ithaca and New York, NY - invites applications for a Quality Assurance and Training Specialist position in the Office of Financial Aid and Student Employment.


The Office of Financial Aid and Student Employment (FASE) is a central administrative student services department within the Division of Enrollment. Our overarching purpose is opportunity and affordability – we provide/coordinate student aid resources creating access and opportunity in alignment with Cornell University’s motto and founding principle - any person, any study.


FASE’s thirty-five staff members are dedicated to helping students navigate the complex financial aid landscape and we work closely with the Office of the University Registrar, Undergraduate Admissions Office, the Office of the Bursar, academic Schools and Colleges, and many other University stakeholders to support Cornell’s diverse, world-class students and their success.

Position Summary

The Quality Assurance and Training Specialist supports the university’s network of student aid professionals using a quality management framework to monitor financial aid business processes and outcomes, identify end-to-end solutions to compliance challenges, build and strengthen resources that are critical to the effective administration of student aid fund, and inform training needs.


Reporting to the Associate Director for Compliance and collaborating closely with other members of the FASE team, the Quality Assurance and Training Specialist’s responsibilities include maintaining current knowledge of federal, state, and institutional programs, regulations and guidance as well as utilizing that knowledge to implement and maintain effective quality management strategies which must be adaptable and effective. The Quality Assurance and Training Specialist will monitor team outcomes including the evaluation of aid application materials, need analysis calculations, and all aspects of aid eligibility determination and apply the quality management framework to improve outcomes, influence policy and procedure, and support team-oriented goals for training and professional development.


The Quality Assurance and Training Specialist applies in-depth understanding of core student service lifecycle concepts such as admissions, financial aid, registration and records, and student accounts, to complete secondary reviews of aid applications, supporting documentation, and need analysis decisions, as well as confirm individual student eligibility for various student aid programs. This position oversees the federal verification process, informing policies and procedures, and providing training and support to staff participating in the process. Using a continuous improvement approach to quality management, the Quality Assurance and Training Specialist regularly reviews and updates processes and procedures and provides training and resources to support compliance efforts. This position collaborates closely with FASE leadership and other university stakeholders, to ensure outstanding operational effectiveness, exceptional service to students, and impeccable compliance with applicable federal, state, and institutional laws, regulations.

This position will be considered for a fully remote work location with occasional travel to campus.

Required Qualifications
:

  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.
  • Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Bachelor’s degree with at least 2 years relevant experience working in a student financial aid/scholarships role or equivalent combination.
  • Experience in a customer service or similar professional setting serving individuals with socio-economically diverse backgrounds and perspectives.
  • Must be self-motivated, well-organized, and attentive to details.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills and ability to manage multiple assignments proactively.
  • Experience working effectively with moderately complex systems and business processes.
  • Proven ability to analyze requirements and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to continuously expand knowledge of technology/tools supporting effective business processes.
  • Knowledge of financial aid software systems, federal aid regulations, or institutional need analysis concepts.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity or experience with institutional need analysis (IM (Institutional Methodology)) and the CSS (College Scholarship Service) Profile.
  • Experience using PeopleSoft, ImageNow, IDOC, or Workday.
  • Familiarity or experience implementing and/or a financial aid quality management program.
