Job Description


The Registrar will implement cross-collections registration work for the Utah Historical Society (UHS) and forthcoming Museum of Utah, to be opened in 2026 under UHS. As a critical member of the Collections Team, the Registrar’s duties will be two-fold: managing incoming objects to the collections for both permanent and temporary use and providing collections management assistance to all types of collections at UHS, which includes but not limited to: : processing historical artifacts into the collection, database entry, condition reports, storage preservation techniques and especially photography of collection items. This position is a great opportunity for professional growth in collections management and the broader museum field.

Duties Include
Registration:


  • Track incoming and outgoing loans, as well as collection donations to the Utah Historical Society; communicate with donors and outside organizations; work collaboratively and effectively to communicate with other staff of the Museum to manage loan paperwork.
  • Manage loan processes, including for the new initiative We Are Utah
  • Assisting in managing the Database, Argus.net
  • Oversight and maintenance of legal documents, manual and computerized records and retrieval systems associated with acquisitions, accessioning, deaccessioning, cataloging, loans, packing, shipping, and storage of objects.
  • Tracking location, movement, and storage of objects on display or scheduled to be on display for both temporary and permanent exhibitions at the Museum of Utah.
Collections Processing:
  • Photograph artifacts at our in-house studio; utilize Lightroom for digital photography needs; work with the Collections Management System (currently Proficio) for photo upload to catalog records; storage and maintenance of the resulting physical and digital photographic materials.
  • Help process objects into the Historical Society’s collections, which includes: numbering, photographing, shelving, data entry to CMS, and archival storage solutions
Collections Care:
  • Assists in the care of Utah Historical Society collections, ensuring that collections are cared for in accordance with high professional standards.
Performance Requirements:
  • Ability to maintain accuracy and attention to detail in an atmosphere of frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to always conduct oneself in an ethical, professional, and respectful manner; in addition to maintaining the confidentiality of all sensitive information encountered while in the performance of duties.
  • Physical ability to perform required duties including:
    • sitting or standing for long periods
    • visual acuity to read a computer screen and a typeset page
    • fine finger dexterity to operate a computer keyboard and mouse, as well as some sewing
    • occasionally lifting up to 40 pounds
    • Climbing ladders
    • Wearing gloves and masks

A person who is detail oriented yet can easily shift their daily routine will work well in our environment. Experience with historical collections, archive processes, and studio photography is beneficial.
