Research Analyst
The opportunity
This role entails collaborating with internal investment business partners within OTPP to gain a detailed understanding of their research requirements, fulfilling their research needs, and enabling our business partners to make informed decisions regarding their current and potential investments.
The Research Analyst will be the domain expert for qualitative Desktop Research (Secondary Research), which focuses on summarizing, collating, and/or synthesizing information from various existing data sources, conducting analysis, and presenting final research results. The various research topics include, but are not limited to, deal support, market/industry intelligence, competitor intelligence, and reputational risk assessment.
Who you'll work with
You'll have the opportunity to collaborate with partners across the organization including the Investments Department, Enterprise Operations as well as external partners.
What you'll do
Cultivate strong partnerships and collaborate with business partners to develop an understanding of their business models and information needs.
Use a variety of search methods to conduct independent qualitative research on various topics, such as deal support, market/industry intelligence, competitor intelligence, and reputational risk assessment in alignment with business needs.
Assess the reliability of data sources and information obtained. If necessary, seek out additional sources of data to meet business research requirements.
Construct meaningful deliverables to communicate results to stakeholders independently. This involves identifying the relevant data sources, extracting and summarizing key findings, conducting necessary analysis, and presenting the results in an informative and relevant format that effectively communicates the research findings. These deliverables may include written reports, presentations, Excel sheets, or other forms of communication, depending on the preferences of the business teams.
Collaborate with other team members to support business research requirements, strategize direction for research, troubleshoot challenges as they arise, and provide solutions for more complex research requests.
Keep accurate records of work done, including detailed and well-documented research notes, supporting documents, research path, and output. Proactively share knowledge and lessons learned with the research team.
Responsible for managing highly confidential information for the Investments Division for research purposes associated with pre-investment/pre-deal decision making.
Responsible for searching and identifying the proper data sources to synthesize information and conduct analysis to meet business partners’ research needs.
Stay up-to-date with research best practices, information sources and new research methods to efficiently locate necessary information and provide valuable insights to the business partners.
Support broader department and divisional objectives and strategy, and participate in delivering on divisional scorecard goals.
What you'll need
Bachelor's degree in Library & Information, Business, Economics, or relevant experience is required.
Canadian Securities Course or demonstrated equivalent experience is a bonus.
Knowledge
Possess knowledge of business, finance, and economics and understand various aspects of investment decision making.
Experience
A minimum of 2 years of experience in the financial services/investment industry.
A minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience in an information center or research role in the financial services/investment industry.
Demonstrate a commitment to providing outstanding client experiences, with a proven track record of delivering high-quality research products that meet or exceed clients' expectations.
Proven ability to work with a wide range of professionals at every level of the organization.
Ability to negotiate with internal clients for appropriate time frames and/or levels of service required to accommodate the request.
Excellent interpersonal skills working in a highly collaborative environment.
Strong critical thinking and problem-solving, planning, and organizing skills.
Strong knowledge of various business research tools, including Capital IQ, Factiva, Broker research, The Deal, MergeMarket, Pitchbook, etc.
Exhibit excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
Ability to manage concurrent tasks and projects
Be highly adaptable to a variety of business / industry contexts while working in a customer service-oriented, team environment.
Ability to interact/consult effectively with client to understand business research needs.
