About Data Services:
The Data Services department is an essential component in the Libraries’ framework for research support and enterprise academic technology. The department provides a central service point for library-situated data services, including but not limited to the Libraries’ provision of numeric and spatial data for teaching, learning, and research; data production; data education; and research data management (RDM). The department facilitates data management through the data lifecycle and provides services related to specialized data labs and programs, e.g., services, consultations, a data repository, and training related to research data management, research data impact, and the Interuniversity Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) membership. The Aerial Photography Research Services (APRS) unit and map collections are also important components of the department’s portfolio. The department’s work requires close collaboration with other library departments and UO divisions, especially the UO’s Office of Research and Innovation and Information Services, UO’s Data Science Initiative, and the Libraries’ Research and Instructional Services (RIS), Digital Scholarship Services (DSS), and Collection & Discovery Services departments.
Position Summary
Reporting to the Associate Vice Provost for Research, Instruction, and Access Services, the Research Data Management Librarian partners with colleagues to offer RDM consultations, data repository development, outreach, and archiving support/deposit consultations. This position is responsible for forming relationships with the appropriate campus, state, and national data and reproducibility organizations.

The Research Data Management Librarian is a new position in the University of Oregon's dynamic, growing Data Services department. This position will work across the UO and the state to respond to new federal and granting agency requirements for data sharing, including the new NIH requirements for Data Sharing and Management Plans, and the new White House OSTP Open Access Guidelines. The person in this role will have the opportunity to build demand by creating new documentation and resources, developing trainings, and building relationships with PIs, Data/Lab Managers, and instructors across the campus. They will serve as an internal resource for colleagues on data literacy and may assist with the development of undergraduate training and resources. This position offers opportunities for growth and tailoring to the candidate’s specific skills and interests while taking into consideration the operational needs of the department.

The Data Management Librarian participates in appropriate professional development activities and organizations to stay current with trends and practices in the field and to meet criteria for promotion and retention. This position contributes to the University’s goals regarding equity and inclusion.

Minimum Requirements
Assistant Librarian:

  • Master’s Degree in Library/Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution; OR
  • Terminal degree in computer science, information sciences, biological sciences, or related field; OR
  • Terminal degree in any field with two (2) or more years’ experience in data analysis, statistical programming, business intelligence, spatial cartography/GIS, data science, or data librarianship.

Associate Librarian:

  • Master’s Degree in Library/Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution; OR
  • Terminal degree in computer science, information sciences, biological sciences, or related field; OR
  • Terminal degree in any field with two (2) or more years’ experience in data analysis, statistical programming, business intelligence, spatial cartography/GIS, data science, or data librarianship.
  • Six years post-terminal degree experience as a librarian or in data analysis, statistical programming, business intelligence, spatial cartography/GIS or data science.

Professional Competencies

  • Knowledge of critical issues regarding reproducible research best practices, research data lifecycle, and scholarly communication issues.
  • Experience with outreach or working in a public services environment.
  • Experience teaching, consulting, or providing instruction.
  • Experience using or teaching one or more programming languages (e.g., Python, R, SQL).
  • Ability to work with faculty, students, and staff in an academic environment.
  • Ability to work independently and in teams in a flexible work environment.
  • Ability to support and enhance a diverse learning and working environment.

Preferred Qualifications
A strong candidate will have some, but does not need all, of the following qualifications:

  • Experience writing or developing data management plans and/or familiarity with best practices in data management, computational reproducibility, sharing, and archiving.
  • Experience writing, supporting, or working on grants or other funding proposals.
  • One or more years of experience working in an academic library or research setting.
  • Knowledge of research-related data cleaning/wrangling, in the context of any of the following: Excel, Power BI, R/tidy data, Python Pandas, SQL databases, or similar.
  • Experience working with GIS data and/or with GIS software such as ArcGIS or qGIS.
  • Knowledge of quantitative and qualitative data concepts and methods, including research design and analysis, and statistics.
