Role Summary:

As a Research Scientist – Materials Science, you will be responsible for both technical direction and execution of advanced research efforts in new alloy design, processing/property optimization, microstructure quantification, root cause analysis for manufacturing improvements, as well as material-related service and repair work to support Vernova Research in the Energy Transition effort.

The primary responsibility is to provide technical leadership for research projects focused on material discoveries, microstructure, processing and performance relationships.


Essential Responsibilities:

As a Research Scientist – Materials Science, you will:

  • Conduct research within an interdisciplinary team environment involving new alloy design, process optimization, property optimization, root cause analysis for processing and manufacturing improvements for various metallic material systems.

  • Develop research objectives and scope to understand environmental degradation of materials.

  • Develop structure-processing-property-environment relationships on a wide range of materials including carbon steels, stainless steels, aluminum, nickel, titanium, and zirconium alloys

  • Share in the authorship of program proposals to external agencies and participate in the government contract execution.

  • Work across and interface with varying organizations and disciplines including but not limited to external agencies, GE businesses and research universities.

  • Share project progress internally and externally through oral presentations and written reports.

  • Foster a multidisciplinary and inclusive team environment

  • Strictly adhere to EHS guidelines.


Qualifications/Requirements:

  • PhD in Metallurgy, Materials Science & Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related field or MS degree in Metallurgy, Materials Science & Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field with a minimum of 3 years of experience in a research environment.

  • Experience in the utilization of advanced characterization techniques (i.e. SEM, TEM, XRD), to understand the structure, processing and performance relationships of metallic materials systems. Examples include steels, Ni-superalloys, Ti, Zr alloys, and Refractory alloy systems

  • Desire and flexibility to contribute to projects across a materials portfolio, including but not limited to Fe, Ni, Co, Al, and Ti.

  • Strong interpersonal, leadership and communication skills in a global team environment.

  • Ability to work independently across all functions/levels in a large multidisciplinary teams.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S. is required. We will not sponsor individuals at the Masters level for employment visas, now or in the future, for this job opening.

Desired Characteristics:

  • Experience in design, processing, and performance evaluation of environmental degradation resistance materials including metallic coatings

  • Experience in high temperature corrosion including steam, sulfate, or a hydrogen-containing environment.

  • Experience with coating process such as thermal spray, laser cladding, etc.

  • Experience in designing experiments, conducting test, and presenting findings and recommendations

  • Knowledge of statistical analysis, data analytics, and the use of computational materials science toward industrial research and development projects, including the application of machine learning and AI-based tools to materials-focused outcomes.

  • Publication and innovation record, as evidenced by peer-reviewed journal articles, conference proceedings, technical books, or issued patents.
