RESEARCH SCIENTIST, Chemical Engineering (ChemE), to expand research capabilities, advance new directions in research, and streamline current efforts in the Smith Lab. Will conduct independent research in the area of membrane science, transport phenomenon, and polymer/inorganic synthesis and characterization and collaborate on overseeing technical lab operations related to research work in the lab. Responsibilities will include synthesizing and characterizing membrane materials; participating in and overseeing experimental testing and maintaining technical records, designing efficient experiments, analyzing data, and ensuring that equipment remains calibrated and functions properly; supporting device fabrication for testing and helping to build/assemble testing systems; participating in and overseeing research activities taking place in the lab, meeting with and advising group members on design and execution of experiments and the preparation of publication-ready drafts of work; writing and publishing peer-reviewed papers and developing patents about research projects of original design and execution; presenting work at scientific conferences/meetings; identifying grant opportunities and supporting PI and lab members for new grants; developing research progress reports; ensuring appropriate recordkeeping; helping to improve laboratory operations and management of laboratory supplies and inventory; assisting with maintaining lab service centers; and performing other duties as required.
Job Requirements
REQUIRED: Ph.D. in chemistry, chemical engineering, or a related field; strong interpersonal, technical/scientific writing, verbal communication and presentation skills; and ability to work as part of a diverse team of graduate students, postdocs, research staff to promote collaboration and cooperation among teams. Must have five years’ related postdoc or research scientist experience, including experience in the following areas: membrane casting, film formation, and testing; polymer science and engineering; and synthesis of metal-organic frameworks.
