This recruitment will be used to fill multiple part-time (a maximum of 20 hours per week) SafeRide Driver & Staff for the SafeRide Program at Oregon State University (OSU).

The SafeRide staff position encompasses driving Motor Pool vehicles. These vehicles range from 12 passenger vans, sedans, and mobility vehicles.

SafeRide staff will also assist in the navigation of the vehicles, dispatching calls in the office, and participating in the pilot for the Beaver Buddies Safety escorts.
Position Duties
Specific Position Responsibilities:
The position of SafeRide staff will encompass:
  • Operating SafeRide vehicle
  • Assisting in the navigation of SafeRide vehicles
  • Dispatching calls in the SafeRide office
  • Participating in the Beaver Buddies pilot program
    • Escorting students throughout & across campus
  • Typical hours of operation will vary each term and depend on the type of shift:
    • Beaver Buddies | Driver/Navigator
      • Fall 5pm-8:35pm| 8:00pm – 1:30am| 8:30pm – 1:45am
      • Winter 5pm – 8:35pm| 8:00pm – 1:30am| 8:30pm – 1:45am
      • Spring 6:45pm-8:35pm | 8:00pm – 1:30pm| 8:30pm – 1:45pm
  • While escorting students, SafeRide staff need to safely escort participants to their desired destinations in a manner consistent with the core values of the SafeRide program, following all state and local road laws at all times.
  • Utilize the SafeRide app (Downtowner) and work with fellow SafeRide staff to coordinate ride/escort requests.
  • Use hand-held radio to communicate with dispatchers or facilitators regarding student ride/escort details

General SafeRide Responsibilities:
  • Maintain a clean office environment and work space
  • Work with the Leadership Team to create a staff culture of safety, inclusivity and agreement where all staff and riders feel welcome
  • Model professional, academic, and personal integrity in all interactions with staff and students
  • Maintain a comprehensive knowledge of all SafeRide policies and incident response protocols and effectively respond to and report incidents as they occur
  • Maintain the highest levels of confidentiality when working with student information
  • Represent SafeRide in a manner consistent with the core values of the SafeRide program at all times while on shift and at campus/community events
  • Complete all required training in a timely manner
  • Read and respond to all emails & Slack messages from the Leadership Team and the Coordinator in a timely manner.
  • Other duties as agreed upon with ASOSU SafeRide Coordinator
  • Must attend the following:
  • All Staff Training (Tentatively September 20th-22nd 2023)
  • Monthly All Staff Meetings (October ’23-June ’24)
Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
    • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
    • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
    • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
    • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
    • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*


  • International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.
Additional Required Qualifications
  • Must possess and maintain a current, valid Driver’s License
  • Must have a working knowledge of state and local road laws and be able to follow them effectively to safely escort students.
  • Must be able to communicate in a respectful and appropriate manner consistent with the core values of the SafeRide program with students and co-workers at all times.
  • Must be able to respond appropriately to incidents that occur and follow all SafeRide policies and protocols.
  • Must be willing to participate in creating a socially just and inclusive work environment.
  • Must have a commitment to supporting OSU student safety and success.
  • Upon hire, must complete and pass a criminal background check.


Conditions of employment
This position requires driving a university vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the applicant must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.
The applicant CANNOT BEGIN WORKING IN THE POSITION UNTIL SATISFACTORY RESULTS HAVE BEEN REPORTED
