SAIT's Continuing Education and Professional Studies division is seeking a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in Deep Energy Retrofit (DER) to review current content curriculum to ensure alignment with Indigenous building practices, and provide the development team with guidance on anything that may be missing. Topics in this area include:
- Residential Building Science Fundamentals
- Residential Deep Energy Retrofit Fundamentals
- Assessing Homes for Deep Energy Retrofits
- Deep Energy Retrofit Planning
- Successful Execution of Deep Energy Retrofits

The SME will be working virtually with a Product Strategist and Instructional Designer at SAIT to review this curriculum.
Future facilitation opportunities may be available to the successful candidate. Courses and assignments are not guaranteed; successful candidates will only be contacted if a facilitation or curriculum development opportunity becomes available.
Role- SME Deliverables required for this project: Work with the Product Strategist and Instructional Designers to review SAIT's current content to ensure alignment with Indigenous building practices, and provide guidance to the development team to content that may be missing from the Deep Energy Retrofit program. The development team will utilize this information to create an effective Course Schedule, Course Outline, Course Description, Assessments, Engaging Activities, Resources and Slides for Deep Energy Retrofit (DER)
- Ensure course materials promote learning and helps to measure and evaluate student’s ability to achieve important, real-world competencies (knowledge, skills, performance tasks, behaviors)
- Ensure the course is learner centered and engaging
- Ensure material is current, relevant, and delivers quality learning experience
- Content to align with industry standards, requirements and best practices
- Define accurate, clear, specific, relevant learning outcomes for the course
- Ensure competencies and learning outcomes are aligned with course content
- Update other pertinent information, including required learning materials, software, technology, assessments, modules
Qualifications- Minimum Bachelor's Degree in related Construction field. An equivalent combination of directly-related education and experience may be considered.
- 2 to 3 year’s knowledge and experience with Construction Management and Deep Energy Retrofit projects
- First-hand knowledge of existing housing in Indigenous communities required
- First-hand knowledge of what employers and industry seek, and how to translate that into course competencies (i.e. knowledge, skills, performance tasks, behaviors)
- Relevant field experience within the last six (6) months
- Knowledge of current industry standards and best practices
- Previous experience developing or revising curriculum (preferred)
- Have strong attention to detail in written communication required
- Maintain reliability and accountability to timelines and project milestones required
- Maintain attentiveness to the deliverables of the engagement and respond to communication in a timely manner
- Ability to organize and present written information
- Fluent in English reading and vocabulary
- Positive & respectful attitude
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Team player – easy to collaborate and work with
- 2 years of experience in cross-training or teaching is an asset, preferably in Construction
- Experience and fluency with Office 365 (MS Word, Outlook and PowerPoint)
- Experience with videoconferencing technology (MS Teams, WebX, Skype or Zoom)
- Experience with a Learning Management System (Brightspace or Moodle) is an asset
- Training and knowledge of adult learning fundamentals
- Formal training or education in facilitation or teaching
- Formal training in online technologies
