Student Conduct Officer

SAIT's Community Conduct department works with students, faculty and staff in managing and addressing student academic and non-academic conduct issues.


The Opportunity


The Student Conduct Officer works with a broad range of institutional stakeholders to address student non-academic misconduct on both an informal and formal basis. This includes carrying out formal investigations of  alleged student non-academic misconduct, interviewing and gathering evidence from complainants, respondents and witnesses, and preparing formal documentation of investigations. The position also provides support as needed for the Office of Community Conduct’s activities and initiatives relating to student academic misconduct.  


The Role
  • Manage Student Conduct Cases - 30%
  • Participates on committees and working groups, provides input and advice, and undertakes research and information gathering to inform decisions
  • Maintaining student non-academic misconduct confidential files
  • Assists as required with the production of statistics, reports on trends, etc
  • Working with institutional stakeholders to implement sanctions for proven cases of student non-academic misconduct 
  • May participate in violence risk triage activities as required, in collaboration with other SAIT stakeholders
  • Conducts formal investigations into allegations of student non-academic misconduct. This includes:
  • Acting as the Office of Community Conduct’s initial point of contact for allegations of student non-academic misconduct
  • Preparing Notices of Investigation, including establishing interim conditions for student respondents during investigations
  • Interviewing complainants, respondents and witnesses
  • Gathering and evaluating evidence
  • Preparing formal documentation that sets out the findings of formal investigations

  • Working with a broad range of institutional stakeholders to address student non-academic misconduct on an informal basis. This includes, for instance - 40%
  • Working with academic managers and faculty to help address and resolve classroom management issues not requiring formal investigation
  • Working collaboratively with SAIT units/departments to address student non-academic misconduct issues, including Student Development and Counselling, Accessibility Services, the International Centre, Security and Emergency Services, Natoysopoyiis, Athletics and Recreation, the Reg Erhardt Library, SAIT’s Residence, the Sexual Violence Program Coordinator and Educator, the Office of the Registrar, etc
  • Participating on SAIT’s Behavioural Intervention Team
  • Provides input and recommendations for continuous improvement in student conduct and harm reduction policies and procedures

  • Providing education on student misconduct processes and responses to the SAIT community, including academic schools, departments, new faculty, etc - 15%

  • Providing support on an as-needed basis in relation to student academic misconduct situations and academic integrity initiatives  - 15%


Qualifications & Experience
  • Minimum                   
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited post-secondary institution in criminal justice, student development or other related field of study, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • At least three years of demonstrated experience carrying out and/or managing investigations of conduct-related allegations
  • Demonstrated understanding of administrative law requirements of procedural fairness and experience applying those requirements in a work-related setting

  • Preferred
  • Minimum of four years’ experience in a post-secondary environment with a diverse student community
  • Experience developing and delivering educational or training programs, workshops etc. to employees, students, etc
  • Specific credentials and knowledge of current trends and issues in the student non-academic conduct field


Skills Required
  • Ability to conduct interviews with and to gather information from a broad range of individuals, often in high-conflict situations
  • Ability to critically analyze and evaluate evidence, information, etc
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to work collaboratively as a team member
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to develop strong relationships and to work collaboratively with a broad variety of individuals and departments across the institution
  • Excellent presentation, written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills

Salary range: $63,830.34 - $94,877.08

Paid Leave: 4 Weeks Vacation / 14 Flex Days per year
