About the Role
We’re looking for a Product Designer to lead design in our team of lifelong learners with a passion for education. This is a uniquely challenging role with opportunity for significant ownership and impact. As our solo designer, you’ll be responsible for setting our design vision, rapidly scoping out new features each week using Figma, and owning all parts of the design stack (visual design, UX, branding, etc.). You’ll work directly with our five engineers, three program managers, and (many) students, as well as often play the role of a product manager, driving new product features from start to finish.
This role is a great fit for you if you thrive in an dynamic startup environment, enjoy the challenge of designing around human systems, love wearing multiple hats, and are excited to work on a mission-oriented product to empower students across the world.
Responsibilities
- Own visual and graphic design for our product, brand identity, product marketing, and other external-facing communications.
- Lead scoping and end-to-end design of new features to support learners and tutors in our platform, balancing craft, speed, and impact on our students. Work closely with our engineers to ship features from concept, to wireframes, to production.
- Interface with our community of high-school aged learners, tutors, and volunteers in user interviews (we’re well connected with our students, and center them in our decisions).
- Maintain and build onto our growing design system, with the goal of creating scalable, reusable systems as our team grows. Audit our existing platform and identify ways to make the design and interface more consistent, intuitive, and delightful.
- Develop an inspiring longer-term product vision for Schoolhouse and bring it to fruition.
About You
- You’re a design generalist with an eye for visual design, a strong product mindset, and fluency shipping experiences from ideas to high-fidelity mockups (we use Figma).
- You have previously been a solo product designer (or one-of-two) for an early-stage startup OR you have personally driven and shipped a large design project on the side. You have 2+ years of design experience.
- You are available to work in a US timezone.
- You communicate clearly–whether you’re collaborating with teammates or crafting intuitive experiences for our high-school aged community.
- You execute very quickly and are biased towards action. You thrive in a fast-paced startup environment: embracing ambiguity and uncertainty, balancing rapid experimentation with scalable solutions, and taking on significant ownership.
- You’re impact oriented. It’s what drives you.
- Nice to have: You have experience in edtech or social impact spaces, and/or have experience teaching or tutoring yourself.
- Nice to have: You’re familiar with frontend web technologies like HTML/CSS–enough to communicate with our engineering team during design hand-off.
Apply
- A rewarding and important role in a small, mission-oriented startup leading a movement in peer tutoring
- Salary range: $120-160k for total comp, with benefits for U.S. employees (medical & dental covered 90% by Schoolhouse)
- Additional stipends to support you and the team’s growth (weekly team lunch stipend, professional development stipend, and remote work stipend)
- This role is completely remote (U.S. timezone), but you’ll have the opportunity to join some really fun company retreats twice a year, as well as optional regional meetups.
- We’re building an inclusive and equitable platform for learners across the world, and it’s important our core team reflects these principles too. We strongly encourage people from underrepresented groups apply!
