Science & Technology Practice Leader

Essential Job Functions for a Science and Technology Practice Leader:


Business Development:

  • Function as the Practice Builder, leading the development of Perkins&Will’s regional Science and Technology practice, reinforcing our position as a recognized leader in programming, planning, and design of labs and facilities
  • Participates in marketing opportunities and facilitates multi-discipline/office collaboration within firm
  • Develops and maintains successful client relationships for repeat business opportunities
  • Generates work through proactive engagement in the community and industry
  • Manages the office’s Science and Technology pursuit plans – oversees opportunities and leads strategies for pursuits
  • Active participation in professional organizations, such as regional IS2L (labs21), SCUP, Tradeline, Lab Design Conference
    Design
  • Understands design process, overall building design concepts, design software technology, and delivery methods
  • Understands and responds to the technical implications of design decisions
  • Promotes firm and project goals of excellence in design, execution, and sustainability
  • Interest, portfolio, and knowledge of the research/ laboratory industry
  • Demonstrated portfolio and skills in design and or planning of research and teaching facilities


Management:

  • Develops and maintains successful client relationships, leading project team in meeting client goals and objectives through successful project delivery
  • Enhance the office’s ability to attract talent through mentoring, developing, and training staff in collaboration with other staff on particular building types
  • Defines, monitors and maintains control of the scope of work and services, including project schedule and work plan
  • Leads communication efforts between the client and Perkins and Will, ensuring timely resolution and management of business issues including contracts and additional services
  • Responsible for communication efforts and meeting with the client, project team, and consultants
  • Must be accountable for meeting financial goals established for projects, and providing timely and appropriate information to Project Accountant to initiate invoicing; ensures timely collections

Education/Experience:

  • Professional Degree in Architecture, and licensure
  • 10+ years managing client relationships and project teams for Science. Specific experience includes demonstrated laboratory planning and research buildings experience in the College and University, Governmental, or private research environment
  • A portfolio of completed, relevant projects attributable directly to the candidate. Projects should be relevant to the strategic goals and objectives of Perkins and Will and the Science and Technology practice
  • Strong written and verbal skills; articulate and a convincing presenter
  • Proven and verifiable experience in identifying leads, building a network, and producing quality projects
  • Understands project financial management and contract administration, including project coordination, budgeting, and scheduling, and contract negotiations
  • Advanced knowledge of design process, construction documentation, construction administration, and materials
  • Basic project management software skills
  • Ability to direct, mentor, and coordinate work efforts of the project team; Good team player who shares opportunities and understands own limitations; a proven record of placing team goals above own
  • Collaborative and professional work ethic, leads by example, motivating project teams
