The Job

Tango is a growing fintech company that is consistently included on lists of Seattle's Best Places to Work. We are looking for an energetic and business-focused corporate and commercial counsel to help the business scale to meet our audacious goals.

In this role, you will be a key member of a small legal team, with ownership of the legal issues arising from our sales team, customer contracts, and supply partnerships. To be successful in this role, you will have excellent drafting and negotiation skills, a strong sense of ownership, and a knack for simplification. You will be able to quickly shift from one high priority task to another and autonomously manage priorities to meet deadlines. You'll also earnestly support our culture of inclusion, respect, integrity, and accountability.

Reports To: Tango's Chief Legal Officer

As Senior Corporate Counsel at Tango, you will:

  • Deeply understand the business and make appropriate risk-based decisions to meet business goals.
  • Negotiate commercial contracts to achieve the best result for Tango. This role has a particular focus on enterprise customer agreements but will also include supplier agreements, service provider agreements, data processing agreements, security addenda, and privacy policies.
  • Draft internal policies and deliver practical guidance on corporate matters including but not limited to intellectual property, corporate governance, and employment law.
  • Earn the trust of internal stakeholders, including the sales team and partnerships team.
  • Effectively represent Tango in front of prospective and existing customers, in written and oral communications.
  • Simplify and scale existing processes to manage contracts.
  • Support the GC/CLO in managing and collaborating with the Company's outside counsel and other projects that arise.
  • Draft updates to templates, guidance, and policies as laws change or the company's risk profile changes.
  • Provide legal guidance in a solution-oriented manner; both identifying and solving issues.

To be effective in our Senior Corporate Counsel role, you must have:

  • JD or equivalent from an ABA accredited law school.
  • Active license to practice law in a jurisdiction and capable of meeting admission requirements in relevant jurisdiction or admittance to the Bar in at least one state.
  • 5+ years legal experience, at least 2 of which are at a top tier law firm or in-house at a tech or financial services company.
  • Professional aptitude in commercial contract drafting, business acumen, and legal judgment.
  • The ability to concisely articulate risks, trade-offs, and available options.
  • Self-motivated and ability to fiercely prioritize in order to meet business goals.
  • Attention to detail and exercise of high judgment when incorporating competing feedback from a diverse set of stakeholders.
  • Ability to learn new legal concepts quickly and apply consistent judgment across issues.
  • Ability to handle corporate governance, IP, and HR matters.
  • Strong ownership and independent decision-making, including an affinity for scaling and proactively making changes and improvements to any situations, processes to substantive changes.

Our ideal Senior Corporate Counsel at Tango will have most of the following skills and experience:

  • 10+ years legal experience, at least 3 of which are in the transactional, corporate, or data privacy department of a top tier firm and at least 2 of which are in-house at a tech or financial services company and include commercial contract negotiations as well as direct interactions with business team colleagues.
  • Familiarity with business-collaboration resources, such as Salesforce and Jira.
  • Working knowledge of privacy and financial services regulations, including BSA, FCRA, GLBA, CCPA, GDPR, Regulation E.

Salary: The targeted pay range for this position is between $151,000 to $189,000 per year. Please note that the actual salary offer will carefully consider a wide range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, and experience. Certain positions are eligible for additional forms of compensation such as bonus.

Remote Work Eligibility

Tango has a flexible work policy, allowing most employees to work from home, in our Seattle office, or in a hybrid format. We are currently set up to employ people in most states, but there are a few where we aren't able to operate yet. We anticipate expanding our operations to include more states in the future, and we welcome your application if you reside in an unapproved state. For now, we can only consider applicants from unapproved states if relocation to an approved state is an option for you.
