The Opportunity:

We are looking for a Mid-level MySQL Database Engineer (L3) on our MySQL-PHP-based platform. You will play a crucial role in optimizing our database operations, ensuring the health and efficiency of our data layer, and supporting our development team in their use of SQL. As a member of our Engineering team, you will be a key part of establishing Shipfusion’s proprietary technology as the global leader in web-based 3PL software.

In this role you will…

• Conduct day-to-day query optimization and possible SQL database configuration tuning to enhance performance on our MySQL InnoDB Cluster.
• Ensure the overall health and security of the data layer.
• Assist and mentor developers in best practices for using SQL effectively.
• Implement and maintain robust disaster recovery procedures, including regular data backups and recovery procedures.\
• Work with our other database technologies such as Redis and MongoDB, ensuring their overall health and stability. (The primary focus is still MySQL)
• Assisting the Engineering developers with database and SQL-orientated challenges, protecting the integrity and performance of our data platform.
• Managing data security and privacy on these platforms, ensuring best practices are followed
• Diagnosing and fixing any database-related issues from our monitoring platforms
• Training other developers on better SQL and database practises, becoming the area knowledge leader
• Reporting to the senior tech team about support and system trends that need to be resolved.

Our stack has the following high-level attributes:

• Web-based MVC using PHP
• Transactional normalized RBDMS data on MySQL 8.0 InnoDB Cluster hosted on AWS EC2 instances
• Message bus architecture for asynchronous processing

What You’ll Bring to the Team (Required Skills):

• At least 4 years practical experience in MySQL 8.0 SQL query development
• At least some experience in MySQL database management and configuration
• Strong understanding of query optimization and SQL tuning.
• Familiarity with disaster recovery strategies and best practices.
• Ability to work collaboratively within a small, growth-stage development team.
• Good problem-solving, analytical, and team-working skills.
• An openness to learning new technologies and ability to learn and adapt quickly.

Optional Advantages

• Experience in MySQL database configuration tuning in transactional environments in virtualized cloud hosts
• PHP PDO experience in connections and execution to MySQL databases
• Other RBDMS technology experience, including Microsoft SQL Server 2012 and later, Postgres DB, Oracle DB or other SQL-based databases
• Other data storage experience, including MongoDB or Redis
• Bachelor’s Degree in computer science or equivalent experience is an asset
