Job Summary:
Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is seeking a Shop Services Assistant to join our Facilities Department. Under general direction from a Facilities Shop Supervisor, the candidate will performs a variety of routine work associated with the areas of machining, maintenance, electrical, and/or carpentry.
The regular, full-time, non-exempt position is eligible for full benefits.
Essential Functions:
- May setup and operate standard machine tools (i.e. lathe, grinder, milling machine, drill press).

May work on drilling, tapping and deburring of machined parts.

May perform basic milling and turning operations.

May assist with inspection and diagnosis of repairs; may modify and repair existing equipment and components.

May perform routine carpentry tasks.

May assist with painting.

May perform electrical tasks as designated.

Must be able to utilize basic hand tools associated with specific trade assigned (i.e. machining, electrical, or carpentry).
- Performs such other duties as the supervisor may, from time to time, deem necessary.
Education & Experience:
- High school, vocational school, or equivalent trade training

Incumbent should be mechanically included and suited to do accurate work that requires concentration and physical efforts

Should have basic mathematical aptitude and understand basic concepts for reading drawings

Must be able to understand verbal and written instructions
Physical Requirements:
Physical duties for this position include but are not limited to, ability to lift 25-50 lbs independently, up to 10 times per day; carry 25-50 lbs, up to 10 times per day. Visual abilities to include near, far, and peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to distinguish basic colors. Hearing requirements include the ability to hear and respond to instructions, and communicate effectively in loud areas (pier/dock, warehouse). Other physical tasks include talking, working around others and with others, frequent prolonged standing/walking; use of hands for basic /fine grasping and manipulation, reaching above and below the shoulders, pulling, pushing, kneeling, bending, twisting, stooping, and climbing ladders/stools. Will be exposed to grease and oils, dust or other irritants, electrical/mechanical/power equipment hazards. Physical duties are subject to change.
