Traveling Content Manager

Job Title: Traveling Content Manager

Department: Communications

Location: Washington, DC preferred – open to remote. This position requires frequent and flexible travel.

Reports To: Director of Social Media

Supervises: N/A

Context:  At the Sierra Club, we believe in the power of interdependence. Together, we remain committed to the fight for a healthy climate built on a foundation of environmental, racial, economic, and gender justice – a future where all people benefit from a healthy, thriving planet and a direct connection to nature. As the climate crisis and deeply entrenched systemic racism all fuel injustice, we will continue to fight for a bold, transformational agenda that recognizes the interconnectedness between our planet, our humanity, and our future. By recognizing that our destinies are tied, we continue to name that all things are fundamentally connected, and the overlap between ecology, race, gender, and representative government will move to either advance our collective humanity or to oppress it. Sierra Club has close to 800 staff across the country and a network of 64 local chapters that are led and fueled by thousands of volunteers. We are also proud to be a unionized employer, with three labor unions representing more than half of our employees.

Scope:  The Traveling Content Manager is responsible for bringing Sierra Club’s brand to life through the development and execution of integrated content and social media strategies for key principals with an emphasis on in-field, real-time content development. Reporting to the Director of Social Media, this role will own the copywriting, design/photo/video creation, channel strategy and curation for principal accounts as part of the larger Sierra Club brand and social media work. This work will require a significant amount of travel with frequently shifting timelines in order to document, develop and post content in real-time.

This is an ideal position for a multidisciplinary creative communications expert who thrives on collaboration, thinks like a cultural organizer, and nimbly stays on top of the latest news, current events, and pop culture. The Travelling Content Specialist must be comfortable working in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment within a small team, alongside a much larger group of stakeholders – ranging from national staff to field offices. Working with directors and executive staff, this role will routinely handle confidential information and must display a high-level of accountability and discretion. The person in this role must also have an understanding of racial justice and environmental justice, and how the two intersect – tracking the movement of narratives and cultural trends that can help the environmental movement do the vital work of protecting people and our planet.

Job activities include but are not limited to:
  • Social Media Strategy: Works with the Director of Social Media to set short-term and long-term goals to achieve successful outcomes around brand development, platform growth, audience engagement, storytelling, and culture change objectives in order to advance the Sierra Club mission. Identifies opportunities through these relationships to tell our story and advance our mission.
  • Identity Development: Develops and curates a variety of Executive and Sierra Club identities as part of a larger overarching brand strategy – travels frequently to generate audio, visual, multimedia and short-form written content that increases performance through strategic pairing of content content types with channel and audience strategies. This role will consult with the Director of Social Media and executive leadership on matters related to the cultivation and presentation of brand identity – advising on strategy that will require the handling of confidential data and information with care, following relevant policies and procedures.
  • Content Creation: Owns beginning-to-end of content and social media development – from conception and short-form copywriting to in-field photo, video, graphic design and reporting — and executes across multiple social platforms. This role will require an ability to be on location with short lead-times, and will spend a few days on the road each week for more than 60% of the year. Develops robust owned media distribution plans – setting and assessing metrics, employing content optimization best practices and analytics/KPI tracking. Ensures that all content aligns with Sierra Club brand, communications and organizational priorities, and meets legal compliance and copyright requirements.
  • Monitoring, Engagement and Reporting: Tracks and reports insights on channel and audience performance to adjust tactics and strategy to achieve goals. Provides reporting to make qualitative and quantitative data-informed decisions on content strategy and audience engagement. Monitors conversations, messages, and effectively provides responses as appropriate.
  • Project and Information Management: Navigates many stakeholders on short timelines while producing dynamic content. Manages a social media calendar, content creation and planning processes – developing project plans, juggling competing priorities, and ensuring that all content aligns with legal and compliance requirements. This involves handling confidential data and information with care and following relevant policies and procedures.
