The position summary states the general nature and purpose of the job. Overall accountabilities are defined in this section.
The Director, Hog Procurement is responsible for leading a team that manages all functions in the area of hog procurement, directing multiple plants’ supply needs for livestock at a competitive cost. This position directs team members engaged in the purchasing and receipt of livestock, and ensures processes are handled in an appropriate and humane manner according to company policies and USDA regulations. This role works in coordination with the Smithfield procurement team to optimize hog supply purchasing. The individual in this role will be critical in building and maintaining relationships with hog producers / suppliers in the Midwest.
Core Responsibilities
• Oversee and manage hog procurement functions for Smithfield Fresh Pork Plants. Provide leadership and assist in development of staff not only at the plant but across the SFD Hog Procurement Team. Oversight of key areas such as committed hog supply, scheduling at the plants, hog cost and hog pricing mechanisms, following budgets and harvest plans etc.
• Build and maintain relationships with hog producers / suppliers in the Midwest. Must be engaged with the hog producer community. Critical to cultivate long-term business relationships with current and prospective suppliers.
• Play active role in supporting and training the hog procurement / buyer team. Work alongside buyers in contract negotiations etc. and help buyers continue to build rapport with producers across the Midwest.
• Work alongside other members of the Hog Procurement Management Team to determine necessary key metrics to track / benchmark enabling the team to meet business goals/objectives. Responsibility for this team to develop, provide and update agreed upon consistent key metrics in standardized reporting across all fresh pork plants on daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual basis depending on report. This team will design, implement and manage these reports and the information in them prior to distribution.
• Play an active role in the preparation of bids, proposals and hog supplier agreements. Responsible for monitoring and ensuring agreed upon obligations are met between both Smithfield and suppliers.
• Manage and promote plant specific and regulatory compliance requirements to employees, suppliers, and truckers, providing emphasis on those pertaining to USDA Packers and Stockyards Program and the USDA FSIS Humane Handling regulations.
• Gather necessary pork industry intelligence and share with the Hog Procurement Team. Supports current and future databases with updated supplier information, production knowledge and competitor analysis as needed.
• Promote and build the Smithfield brand through Key Supplier & Industry meetings, conventions and other opportunities in the Midwest.
• Understand and interpret hog and pork markets.
• Utilize technology to demonstrate where opportunities exist to improve business.

Qualifications
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four-year college or university in animal science, agricultural business, agricultural economics, economics, business or related field and 10+ years of relevant experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• 5+ years of demonstrated experience in team management and development is required
• Prior knowledge of the pork or food industry. Being well connected in the US hog and pork industry is strongly preferred.
• Knowledge of accounting, inventory, manufacturing and ordering process.
• Truckers Quality Assurance Advisor Training, preferred.
• Pork Quality Assurance-Certification or Advisor, preferred.
• USDA bondable.
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office Outlook, Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
• Economic and math skills, and the ability to analyze information and data.
• Strong business and negotiating skills.
• Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
• Demonstrated ability to influence the organization at the most senior levels.

Salary Range
$141,500.00 - $211,625.00
