Join our dynamic Engineering team at SolAmerica as we seek an experienced Electrical Engineer with 7+ years in the field! In this exciting mid-level position, you'll be primarily engaged in early and mid-stage development engineering tasks, collaborating across various business units within our company. You'll also have the opportunity to guide and oversee the work of an associate-level electrical engineer.

We are looking for a driven electrical engineer with a minimum of one year of solar electrical design experience, which includes expertise in PVsyst modeling, single-line diagram (SLD) development, interconnection application preparation, and equipment specification. PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Interconnection Application Management

  • Lead the preparation of interconnection applications for DG solar projects and coordinating submission with our Interconnection Manager.
  • Manage third party engineers and internal associate level engineers to complete the components of IX applications, while reviewing deliverables to ensure quality control.
  • Support Interconnection Manager with technical reviews of system impact studies (SISs), interconnection agreements (IAs), and power purchase agreements (PPAs).
  • Coordinate meetings, meet in-person with, and communicate directly with the utilities, municipality/cooperatives, system off-takers, or independent system operators (ISOs) to ensure the interconnection and design meets all requirements.

 

Electrical Engineering & Design Support:

  • Review single-line diagrams (SLDs), three-line diagrams (3LDs), site layouts, and interconnection designs for projects.
  • Perform PVsyst modeling and analyze energy production estimates.
  • Prepare technical specifications for electrical equipment such as inverters, transformers, and switchgear.
  • Ensure compliance with NEC, IEEE, UL, and other applicable electrical codes and standards.
  • Support review of new equipment specifications to ensure system compatibility.

 

Project Development & Technical Due Diligence:

  • Support feasibility studies, optimization exercises, and early-stage project designs.
  • Work with project developers and business development to optimize interconnection efficiency, develop strategy, and optimize site location.
  • Assist in evaluating technical risks and conducting engineering due diligence on potential projects and acquisitions.

 

Team Leadership & Collaboration:

  • Provide technical mentorship and guidance to the associate-level electrical engineer on the team.
  • Work cross-functionally with Project Development, Project Execution, and Project Finance teams.
  • Collaborate with third-party consultants and utility engineers to resolve technical challenges.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE

  • 7+ years of electrical engineering experience, preferably in power systems, renewable energy, or utility interconnection.
  • Familiarity with utility interconnection studies, hosting capacity maps, and regulatory filings.
  • Strong proficiency in AutoCAD, PVsyst, or similar solar design software.
  • Strong project management, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of NEC, IEEE 1547, UL 1741, NFPA 70, and related electrical codes.
  • Experience working with utilities and ISOs for interconnection application processes.

 

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE

  • Experience with distributed generation (DG) interconnection processes (e.g., net metering, wholesale DG, community solar, behind-the-meter, or front-of-meter projects).
  • At least 1 year of firsthand solar electrical design experience, including:
  • PVsyst modeling for energy production estimates.
  • Single-line diagrams (SLDs) and electrical system design.
  • Equipment specification for solar inverters, transformers, switchgear, and other balance-of-system (BOS) components.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license, Engineer-In-Training (EIT), or on track to obtain one.
  • Experience with energy storage system (ESS) integration in solar projects.
  • Familiarity with power flow studies, short circuit analysis, and protection coordination (SKM, ETAP, PSCAD, etc.).
  • Familiarity with glint and glare studies and noise impact studies
  • Familiarity with commissioning testing, IEEE 1547, and National Electrical Testing Association (NETA) requirements.
  • Understanding of development, EPC, and construction processes for solar projects.
  • NABCEP PV Associate or PV Design Specialist certification.
