Engineering Operations Engineer - Cloud Releases (Contract)

Sonatus is a leader in providing technologies and software to global OEMs to build software-defined vehicles. We are looking for a highly motivated Release Engineer as part of Engineering Operations to join our fast-growing team. In this position, you will be responsible for managing the release lifecycle, emphasizing efficiency, automation, and coordination of releases. This role focuses on automating the release management process, including scheduling, version control, and documentation, rather than infrastructure or deployment-related automation. We are looking to fill this position in the Sunnyvale, California or Mississauga area of Canada.



Duties and Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain automation tools to streamline release processes, including version control, release scheduling, and notifications.
  • Implement and improve scripts and tools to automate repetitive tasks in release management, focusing on efficiency and accuracy.
  • Coordinate with engineering, product, and QA teams to create reliable release schedules and ensure all stakeholders are informed.
  • Establish and document best practices for version control, release branching strategies, and release notes.
  • Manage release documentation, including creating detailed release notes, feature lists, and known issues, leveraging automation where possible.
  • Conduct release reviews and post-release retrospectives to identify and implement process improvements.
  • Monitor release timelines and milestones, utilizing automated alerts to keep teams updated on release readiness.
  • Ensure all release-related activities are tracked in release management tools, developing custom automations to enhance tool functionality.


Qualifications and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in release management, with a strong focus on process automation.
  • Proficient with scripting languages (e.g., Python, Bash) to support release-related automation.
  • Experience with release management tools (e.g., Jira, Confluence) and version control systems (e.g., Git, SVN).
  • Excellent project management and organizational skills, with a focus on automation and efficiency.
  • Good knowledge of containerization technologies (e.g. Docker)
  • Strong communication skills for effective cross-functional coordination.

  • Experience with CI/CD tools and concepts (e.g., Jenkins, GitLab CI, Argo CD), though responsibility for pipeline management lies with separate teams.
  • Familiarity with cloud cost management and optimization strategies.

  • Understanding of security and compliance requirements in release management.
  • Knowledge of observability and monitoring tools/frameworks (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana, ELK stack, OpenTelemetry).
