Job Description Summary
The Sports Information Director Serves as the primary public relations person for all intercollegiate sports and the Athletics Department as a Unit Area, developing and maintaining positive and community relations. Responsibilities of the position include the accurate, and timely updating/reporting (compilation, maintenance, archival and reporting) of all statistical data for all sport programs to the SCIAC and the NCAA, including (but not limited to) the scheduling, coordinating, training, and supervision of the statistical and score table staff for all home events. Additional duties include media relations and strategic media partnerships; assisting with game-day operational staff organization; and the high-level English composition of content creation/editing/maintenance for leoparathletics.com and social media platforms. This position is additionally responsible for developing and producing Athletics Department publications – both printed and digital -that assist with the promotion and marketing for all intercollegiate programs and the department

Specific Duties
  • Develops and implements a comprehensive public relations program to help the University achieve the goals established for Athletics by building and maintaining positive relationships with key constituencies (alumni, donors, friends, current student-athletes, prospective student-athletes, members of the campus community, and the public at-large), helping create an atmosphere among the public that is conducive for effective fundraising, and developing and maintaining positive relationships with media.
  • Ensures that information about the University’s intercollegiate athletics programs is available to NCAA, SCIAC, and other affiliated constituents in a timely and effective manner (with updated, accurate, and grammatically correct information) by developing and directing a comprehensive program of sports coverage which focuses on both competitive and non-competitive activities and includes information on student-athletes and teams in the University’s intercollegiate athletics program. Prepares and submits athletic related nominations for conference, regional, and national awards on behalf of the Department of Athletics and student athletes.
  • Serves as an on-the record public relations spokesperson and liaison for athletic administration, intercollegiate sports programs, and coaches in the Department of Athletics. Expands the opportunities for publicizing the University’s intercollegiate athletics program by serving as a liaison between the University and the media, responding to requests from the media for information regarding individuals and teams, initiating communications, as appropriate, with the media and providing information which could result in additional coverage of athletics, and coordinating media needs and reporting functions for all events so that material for publication or broadcast is available as desired.
  • Responsible for compiling, maintaining, archiving and reporting all statistical data and reports for all sport programs to the SCIAC and the NCAA. Files end of the season statistical information to professional agencies. Ensures that necessary individual and team statistical data for University teams and their opponents are gathered and disseminated through regular sports information channels by developing, organizing, and managing a program for staffing athletics events with Athletic personnel at competitive events hosted by the University and staffing or providing liaison, as necessary, for those competitive events which occur away from the University.
  • Manages all aspects of the athletics program official website (leopardathletics.com) and social media platforms; creates graphics and promotional materials; pitches and responds to media requests; writes game recaps, feature stories and profiles, updating record books and other historical documents by expertly using the English language in regards to spelling, language, and content. Responsible for coordination and supervision of Web/video streaming of home athletic contests.
  • Develops, creates, and produces game programs, electronic media guides, calendars, brochures and other promotional publications for all intercollegiate sport programs, and the Department of Athletics as a unit.
  • Develops a competent, effective Unit Area staff by recruiting and hiring qualified applicants for all positions, providing appropriate training, supervision, and performance evaluation. Schedules, coordinates, trains and supervises statistical and score table staff for all home events. Must have the ability and experience to solely execute live in-game statistical capturing for all sports (StatCres, Presto, etc.). Creates, updates, and monitors work schedules of statistical and score table staff for all Department of Athletics home contests.
  • Responsible for the supervision and management of Unit area staff, including but not limited to: the PT Coordinator of Intercollegiate Statistical Information, two graduate assistants, and approximately 30 student workers.
  • Manages the daily operations of the Sports Information Office by establishing activity priorities, goals, and objectives, determining resource allocation, assigning activity responsibilities, developing policies and procedures regarding operational performances, and evaluating progress toward achievement of established goals and objectives.
  • Writes and produces special features for media releases; creates and distributes a Leo Letter and seasonal Athletics Department newsletter to La Verne community, alumni, current students and their families and friends of the program. Understands that all special releases (ie. new hires, position changes, awards won, etc.) must be verified by the Director of Athletics prior to publication or release. In cooperation with the University’s marketing and communications unit, produces additional content of an athletics nature for the University’s alumni publications and the University’s website.
  • Coordinates photography and videography for intercollegiate athletic teams, competitions, and departmental special events. To include (but not limited to): team and individual roster pictures/video to post on web, including action photos, individual photos, and team photos, as well as athlete of the week and highlight videos; electronic media guides; the production of highlight videos as needed and requested (e.g. Senior Blanket Award Night, Hall of Fame, etc.). Updates and maintains Athletics Department photo and video archives.
  • Ensures that major special events such as the Athletics Hall of Fame induction, graduation honors for student-athletes, major conference and national event participation by University of La Verne, and other special events reflect positively on the University by conducting research of records to identify and verify the accomplishments of teams and individuals; writing scripts for speeches or public announcements; providing background material which lend historical significance and perspective to the accomplishments of current events; and assisting in the planning and production of special events (e.g. Hall of Fame; Student Athlete Appreciation Day; Scholar Athlete Luncheon; Senior Blanket Night, and etc.).
  • In collaboration with the Game-Day Operations and Events Manager, helps develop a marketing/promotion plan for all intercollegiate sport programs and assists with promoting and marketing of the Department of Athletics, and assists Athletics Department with fundraising endeavors.
  • Promotes a positive image of the University through participation in community and professional organizations (eg. College Sports Communicators), representing the University at professional meetings and community committees, and establishing and maintaining credible relations with various news media and other collegiate sports information offices. Cooperatively interacts and communicates with other like constituencies.
  • Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses required to stay updated and relevant in the position and in the industry.
  • Abides by and complies with National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and SCIAC rules, academic standards, requirements, and policies of the University, and all guidelines and policies of the Athletics department and reports any concerns of compromise or violation of rules, standards, guidelines or policies to the Director of Athletics or the Associate Director of Athletics for Compliance.
  • Performs other duties, summer duties, special projects and other duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics, provided that such activities shall not prevent this position from performing the above duties and responsibilities.
Minimum Qualifications
  • A bachelor’s degree, preferably in Journalism, Public Relations, Communications or Sports Management.
  • Candidate should have relevant work experience in a college Sports Information Office/Athletics Communications Office
  • A commitment to and knowledge of NCAA rules, regulations, and standards in regards to statistical gathering
  • Expert ability with sports statistical software (StatCrew, Presto, etc.), publishing software, photography and video editing; the ability to maintain and monitor a successful social media presence for the department
  • The ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to compose and write stories and public releases in English at a high-level – with correct spelling, proper grammar, and intriguing creativity.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and operate an effective athletics communications office/unit area with minimal area supervision. Includes (but not limited to) publications, staff training, budget, travel, inventory, equipment, scheduling, fundraising, alumni relations, and rules compliance.
  • Demonstrated ability to stay abreast of current and developing trends (video, voice, data, and computing technologies).
  • Extensive knowledge and experience and ability with StatCrew/Presto software or comparable statistical record keeping software
  • Working knowledge of social media platforms, including but not limited to Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.
  • Demonstrated awareness and commitment to effectively establishing relationships and positive communications across multiple dimensions of diversity including, but not limited to race, gender, sexual preference/identity, physical limitations, class or religious perspectives.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling.
  • Ability to work with a diverse team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Enthusiasm and the ability to thrive in an atmosphere of constant change.
  • ’A valid California drivers license.
