23andMe, the leading consumer genetics and research company, has accumulated a wealth of genotypic and phenotypic information from participants committed to improving human health through advances in genomics. Our Therapeutics team in South San Francisco leverages this data to discover and develop new treatments that can offer significant benefits for patients with serious, unmet medical needs.

This dedicated research and drug development group identifies novel targets using 23andMe's genetic database and performs preclinical research to advance programs towards clinical development. We currently have programs across several therapeutic areas, including but not limited to oncology, respiratory, and cardiovascular diseases. We are seeking an outstanding Sr. Associate Scientist or Scientist I to join a collaborative, cross-functional team focused on the biological characterization of drug targets and the preclinical development of drug compounds. Successful candidates will have experience applying molecular and cellular biology approaches to elucidate target function and mechanism of action.


What You'll Do

  • Experimental investigation of the biological function of drug targets
  • Develop, validate, and optimize in vitro assays for target validation
  • Design and execute cell-based and biochemical assays to assess drug candidate activity, potency, and mechanism of action
  • Interpret, record, and present complex biological data
  • Communicate and collaborate effectively across multiple functions
  • Maintain compliance with all company policies and procedures

What You'll Bring

  • The ideal candidate will have a strong track record of productivity and demonstrated effective collaboration on complex projects
  • Bachelor's (+ 5 years' related experience), Master's (+ 3 years' related experience) or PhD in biological sciences
  • For Scientist I Level: Will bring experience working cross-functionally with other biology teams and deep knowledge in one of the following areas: immunology, cancer biology, musculoskeletal biology, or cardiometabolism.
  • Experienced in cellular and molecular biology and biochemistry
  • Familiar with high-throughput assays, primary cells, microscopy/image processing, FACS
  • Proactive and highly self-motivated with strong analytical and troubleshooting skills
  • Excellent communication, organization, and collaboration skills
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced team environment

Strongly Preferred

  • Biotechnology research or pharmaceutical industry experience
  • Experience with preclinical models of human disease

Pay Transparency
23andMe takes a market-based approach to pay, and amounts will vary depending on your geographic location. The salary range reflected here is for a candidate based in the San Francisco Bay Area. The successful candidate's starting pay will be determined based on job-related skills, experience, qualifications, work location, and market conditions. These ranges may be modified in the future.

San Francisco Bay Area Base Pay Range

Sr. Associate Scientist:

$115,000 - $173,000 USD

Scientist I:

$128,000 - $192,000 USD
