Department Profile

Housing, Dining & Auxiliary Enterprises houses 10,000 students, faculty and family residents on campus, provides support services for 9,300 students residing in the communities adjacent to the campus, serves 21,000 customers daily in its retail and board dining programs, manages the UCSB Campus Store and University Center, hosts 150,000 guests annually for conferences and meetings, manages a major events center (Events Center), and oversees the administration of transportation, parking and fleet services. Additional responsibilities in the HDAE portfolio include Administrative & Residential Information Technology (ARIT) and The Club & Guest House. HDAE employs 600 full-time employees and 1,800 student employees. HDAE maintains a physical plant of more than 3 million square feet of buildings and 250 acres of grounds and landscaping.

Brief Summary of Job Duties

The Senior Custodian is primarily responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of the Central Kitchen. The Sr Custodian will perform a wide variety of cleaning tasks, and is responsible for reporting kitchen equipment maintenance needs. Supervises crew of student employees during nightly kitchen clean up. Supervises part-time student employees.

Required Qualifications

Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience.


Work Experience:

  • 6 months janitorial experience.
  • Knowledge of safety and sanitation regulations regarding proper storing of chemicals in a food environment, proper cleaning of janitorial closet, safe lifting and transporting procedures, and ability to train others in this area.
  • Exhibits organizational skills sufficient to ensure timely completion of tasks.
  • Communication skills sufficient to direct the work of others and interact successfully within a large staff, including part time student employees.
  • Ability to understand, read and write English for the purpose of reading and creating special projects lists.
  • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience


Special Conditions of Employment

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and work standing for up to 8 hours per day.

Job Functions/Percentage of Time/Duties

Custodial Duties-90%

  • Responsible for all custodial duties of the Central Kitchen
  • Sweeps and mops floors, cleans floor mats, uses floor cleaning machines in the Central Kitchen.
  • Dust, clean, wax and/or polish furniture, woodwork, light fixtures, venetian blinds, radiators, grills, ducts, blackboards, filing cabinets and other designated areas of equipment.
  • Removes trash from the kitchen.
  • Empties wastebaskets, recycling containers, and vacuums office(s) in dining spaces as needed/assigned.
  • Periodically cleans transit cabinets, walls, and windows.
  • Stocks towel dispensers and soap dispensers at hand wash sinks and cleans hand sink basins.
  • Mops, cleans and disinfects locker rooms with responsibility to replenishing supplies.
  • Cleans floor drains.
  • Unclogs minor drain stoppages.
  • Cleans floors and walls of walk-in refrigerators on a periodic schedule.
  • Operates floor buffers, shampoo machine, wet/dry vacuums, waxers, floor scrubbing and / or other related cleaning operations.
  • Operates the dish machine as needed/assigned.
  • Cleans the ice machines, including exterior, tops, doors, and drains. -Maintains adequate inventory of cleaning supplies, and reorders when necessary.
  • Keeps all cleaning equipment and supplies stored neatly.
  • Cleans and polishes walk-in doors.
  • Wash doors, inside windows and outside windows within Central Kitchen
  • Cleans exhaust hoods in kitchen, bakery, and square areas.
  • Maintains all trash dolly wheels.
  • Removes strings and keeps wheels oiled.
  • Performs various cleaning duties as directed by the Kitchen Manager.


Safety-10%

  • Utilizes safe working practices when using floor cleaning equipment.
  • Reports any repairs needed.
  • Identifies unsafe conditions and corrects or informs the supervisor.
